The list of locations in Hameln is as yet a list of just one, Gordon Bks. Until the turn of this century there were two regiments in Hameln. One in Gordon Bks (Lissingen Kaserne) until it moved to Paderborn and the other in Bindon Bks until it moved to Gordon Bks.

Added to that there is a lot more real estate used by the RE in the town with Gundolf Park, Bailey Park, Wouldham Park/Trg Area and Upnor Hard to name but a few.

The local name for Bindon Bks was Sharnhorst Kaserne
I was there from 1964 to 1968.
Interesting pics on this site showing housing.

Hi Ray,

I was with 40 Fld at Osnabruck, 1951-1952 and it was then part of 37 AER in Roberts barracks.

Do you have any history of 40 Fld?

I joined the sqn in Germany [posted from Cove, Farnborough to Germany a transit camp in Hannover [where was this?] then posted to 40 Fld]; it had come from Crickhowell, near Abergavenny sometime in 1950, to strenghten 37 AER.

We did a couple of interesting bridging exercises at Hameln; but cant remember the lcoation. We camped in tents some distance away, on a hill looking down towards the town, not the hills where the Pied Piper went into.

A really good small unit, and we had great times.

Anyone got any contacts with ex 40 Fld Sqn RE ?

Regards
Tony Burgess

PostSubject: Hameln Station Closure June 2014   Bindon Bks Icon_minitime14/6/2014, 11:04

End of an era, German press reports closure of Hameln station in Niedersachsen and lists similar impacts on Bergen Hohne and Bad Fallingbostel - due to be emptied by end of 2015:

http://www.weser-kurier.de/region/niedersachsen_artikel,-Briten-verlassen-Hameln-_arid,874076.html

There will be some Married Quarters for sale in the town - although noted that EU squatters are already occupying some emptied properties - and looking for work, abd developeers needed to re-activate vacated barracks etc.

On the plus side some of the bridging /ferrying /water crossing elements are being moved to share accn with the Bundeswehr in Minden on the Weser - soldiers and fgamilies will be accommodated in Bielefeld - just until suitable sites / infrastructure has been developed in UK.

The Brits have departed Hameln. Locals and veterans remember the years the British garrisoned the town and have built an informative German/English web , with many facets, at

Gents.
Hope this finds you all well where ever you might be and I gather from the data here
we are all around the globe. Smile
Ref this thread on Hameln. We the Walker Family were there with my father from 1951-54.My father was then S/Sgt A J Walker 43 Field Park Sqd.
26 Field Eng Regt.R.E. Gordon Barracks.
But for a short break of about 8 months as my father was sent  down to the Army leave center in Ehrwald (Austria) to work I add.

After this we went back to the same house in Hameln. 15 Chamisso Str.
On his return from Ehrwald he then became WO11.
I have been back a few times to visit this lovely Town & Ehrwald , story and photos to follow on both.

Stand by our Len again to help with the photos Rolling Eyes
In the mean time I wish you all well.
Stay safe.

PostSubject: Re: Bindon Bks   Bindon Bks Icon_minitime17/5/2017, 18:21

Good evening all,

My name is Amy Hall, my father is Brian Woodings, who was in the 125 Coy at Bindon Barracks from (we think) 55-58. My dad has quite severe dementia and often finds comfort talking about his army days. Unfortunately as the dementia progresses he finds it increasingly difficult to remember specific details and as almost all his army photos were lost in a family fire many years ago we have little left to help prompt him.

We have one photo of him with a chap he affectionately refers to as, "Daddy O" who we believe originated from Jamaica and lived in London. Also Dad remembers Captain Reed, whose wife Dad drove round when she needed to go shopping.

I realise this is a little random to receive a message as such but my husband and I are really trying to find any extra information or pictures (or even people who Dad served with although we realise this isn't very likely) that may help us talk about his army days with him and prompt his memories. Not only would he enjoy it but it could be really good for keeping his mind active which is so important with dementia.

If you have any information, even about the camp itself which might provoke conversation (layout, different countries that interacted - he often mentions the Americans, funny memories that might be understood by the mass that were stationed there, literally anything) then I would really appreciate it if you could let me know. If you don't then I very much understand!

All the best and thanks for reading this,

Amy Hall

Hi Amy,
I've sent you a message, although it sits in the outbox and not in the sent box, which is a bit confusing. Anyway, I have some information for you if you would like to contact me.

Best wishes,
Leigh James

Leigh,

The message will sit there in the Outbox until Amy picks it up! Then it will change to Sent!

It is possible that Amy has seen your forum note listed on this forum yesterday. Additionally, she will also have been sent an email indicating that someone has posted on her posting. Thus not chcking the PM message.

Alan
