I was in TE troop 3 squadron 19 army group signal regiment 1956 - 1958 and our accomodation was in single storey blocks. There were woods at the back of the blocks and a footpath which led to the NAFFI.

I wonder what happened to them or if they are still there

You can see JHQ for yourself on Google earth. I think that there's even a link to it on this site somewhere. The general layout of JHQ has never changed but some of the buildings may have since your day. Nevertheless, you'll be able to orientate yourself fairly quickly. My wife served there and my although I didnt, my HQ was there. Always liked JHQ. They had stuff down there that we didn't have up in the cuds. Stuff like a cinema, two disco's, outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, huge NAAFI, PX, bus route through the camp, etc. It amazed us when we heard people say that they didn't like it down there. Have a look at Google earth though, you can zoom in quite close. Hope you find what you are looking for! Great place, shame that it's all going to close down. A large part of the commitment is returning to RAF Innsworth in Gloucestershire by 2012 and it'll not be long before the rest come back as well, especially when the Tories get back into the driving seat.

I lived in Block 14 on York Drive (on the western side of JHQ) They were also single storey blocks which seemed to be the norm for single soldiers accommodation in the JHQ. I wonder if there was some local planning law that directed how high you could build etc. I seem to recall that all the road were laid out to follow original pathways and tracks that were there before being built on

There are some good facebook pages for Rheindahlen with great photos of the past as well as how it looks nowadays. Sadly it's all closed down but soem peopel have managed to sneak in and take some videos. There are good forums to. In fact I think I recognise your name so maybe you've found it by now!
