恭賀發財

Welcome to the year of the rabbit.

Anyone here served in Hong Kong or Singapore?

I loved the Chinese New year festivities. I used to give money as a present in little red envelopes specially made for the occasion to my Chinese staff and their children.

Just as a matter of interest: Due to the proximity of Robbie Burns' birthday to the start of the Lunar New Year, the Vancouver Chinatown Lions Club holds a hybrid celebration they call "Gung Haggis Fat Choy".

I think the Immortal Bard would have been delighted. Perhaps it gives substance to his assertion that; "...It's coming yet for a' that. That man to man the world oer, shall brithers be for a' that."

I hope the Year of the Rabbit is good to you all.

This gem, attributed to yer man Burns, was sent to me by a Glaswegian.

Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie, lurks in yer belly after a feastie.
Nae matter whit ye try an' dae, a body's gonna hev tae pay.
Even if ye try tae stifle, it's like a bullet oot a rifle.
Haud yer bum tight tae the chair, tae try an' stop the leakin' air.
Shoogle yersel' frae cheek tae cheek an' pray tae God it disnae leak.
But oot it comes like a clap o' thunder.
Ricochets aroon' the room. Michty me, a sonic boom !
God aw michty, it fairly reeks.
Hope I huvnae shit ma breeks !

Poetry indeed !

Hi Jim,

I served in Hong Kong from Jan 1972 to July 1974. Best 2 1/2 years of my army service! First lived in a flat in Mei Foo Sun Chen overlooking Stonecutters Island (now part of the mainland) then moved up to Dills Corner. I was an Air Tech with 656 Squadron at Sek Kong airfield. We had an amah who came in twice a week and she was well looked after at Chinese New Year.

That was after 4 years in Germany in Celle were I was with 73 A/C Wksp at Weitzenbruch and I thought that was a great place too.

G'day again.

Ah, HK. My Dad's Regt - 1Bn The Northamptonshire Regt was stationed in HK, 56-57, the Regt was dispatched to deal with the Chinese Riots.

The Regt with many families, including us, sailed on HMT Nevasa, had to go via the Cape of Good Hope, as the Suez was closed, thanks to Mr Nasser. Evil or Very Mad Journey took about 5 weeks. I recollect the troops having firing practice off the back of the ship. I was 8 at the time.

In HK, we lived at Sheung Shui and the Regt was based at Sek Kong. I recollect going to the British Forces School via Armoured Car probably a Saracen or Saladdin, cannot recollect, but we were guarded by Ghurkas also had a couple of Ghurkas guarding our house which was in the village not in barracks. Some of the locals were very anti Brit then, hence the Ghurkas. I recollect my Dad's Bn was always up in HK/Kowloon re the riots.

I remember our Amah chasing the chooks around the yard, trying to behead one to cook for dinner, yuk. Blood and feathers everywhere.

HK/Kowloon in those days was small, I was in HK in Sept 1997 a couple of months after China took it over from UK, crikey, it is huge now.

Now there is a Disneyland in the area, can you believe, lot of Aussies go there for holidays.

I could never use chopsticks, still cannot, but don't mind the tucker.

Huge new airport there now also, one of the best in the world, replaced old Kai Tak Airport.
