I was, it was being sluggish, but giving our computer a sound thrashing with teabag's umbrella seemed to sort it out.

Interesting saying that. My dad used to say "get (got) a cob on". Any ideas what it means or where it comes from? Must travel well if even the Jockenese are using it!

Umbrella? Anorak if you don't mind! Rolling Eyes

It`s only the multi lingual (ex-servic) Jockenese who use it ..

Manchester? Daddy was scouse born and bred although his fore fathers came from Durham. Nothing I say again, nothing good ever came out of Manchester apart from the ship canal into the Mersey.

From the urban dictionary

COB "to be in a mood, angry, or be having a mard"

MARD "to be annoyed or pissed off, to be having a cob"

This had me wondering if the exclamation "Cobblers" was in any way related?

Before this gets out of hand and teabag launches a pre emptive stike on "Manchestoh", let us not forget that "having a cob on" inevitably leads to someone "having a strop".

I notice the Smartarse dictionary doesn't mention one of those ! study

"Cobblers" ? Another polite way of saying "Bollocks". (As is "nuts").

It does you know

strop Noun. A bad mood, a fit of fury. E.g."I got in a strop after that bloke knocked over my pint of beer."

stroppy Adj. Bad tempered. {Informal}

Well, there's a thing ! Never knew MARD ( or similar, MARDY locally, of the same implied meaning) was wide spread throughout the UK, as well as beein', reight common lingo in Sheff.

Sithee...... Tell us if tha nose that that's reight, and it's nowt to do wi Mardi Gras, Rosen Montag or any such scoffin' an' suppin' an mankin' abaht.......... Orl Reight ? `

In respect of COBBLERS, I have it on good authority ( A mate who has the misfortune to have been born in the Metropolis ), that it derives from rhyming slang, Cobblers' Awls.

Gladly Gordon !

In small doses.......... Mardy is to be upset, to have your nose put out of joint,(not physically)
or, to use another local expression " ...... to have a monk on" ( Don't ask why, I don't know )

Rest of it........ Look here, (See Thee). .......Please tell if you know that's right and it has nothing to do with Mardi Gras, Rosen Montag, or any such jollifications ( Eating, drinking,
messing about)......... OK ?

I imagine you can translate "Cobblers' Awls" yourself.

"Manking" has several implications....... messing about, mucking about (more rhyming slang?)
or if some one says " 'as tha bin mankin' ?" it could be " Have you been with a member of the opposite sex ".

It has its uses. A mate & I were chatting up two Welsh lasses, they lapsed into sniggering Welsh. ( this is a long time ago, we're used to females laughing at us now). Anyway, a couple of mouthfuls of South Yorks put a stop to it. And anything else if I remember rightly.

I never heard the expressions "having a cob" or "getting a cob on" (the latter sounds slightly risque!), but when I read "having a strop" I had an "Aha!" moment.....Now, I never heard of "a strop" per se, but I am very familiar with the term "stroppy".....my mom often said "don't get stroppy with me!" whenever I gave her attitude or argued back. And I've heard it used as per "stroppy old b****" and such, so the 'aha!' moment centred around the (now) obvious reality that "stroppy" would obviously be the condition of having a strop.

I use the term "stroppy" myself (being, don't forget, only a 2nd generation Canuck, with both paternal and maternal grandparental ties to England....domestics on dad's side and landed gentry on mom's. Canada, the Great Equalizer. Mom and Dad never would have even met, let alone been allowed to marry, had they been born in UK at the time!)....where was I??? Oh yes....I use the term "stroppy" myself and am often met with blank looks from those around me. Damn yankee influence on the language, don'tcha know?
