PostSubject: Trying to find - Jack/John Charles Topple   20/11/2011, 21:17

Hello

I am trying to find any background information on my grandfather, Jack (John) Charles Topple.

I recently uncovered a death notice stating that he died in Germany in 1968 aged 55, with BAOR marked beside it. I think he may have served with the RAMC but beyond this is a complete mystery.

He apppears to have used both Jack and John as his christian name at various times.

Any information or help would be gratefully received.

From the death certificate, he died on 8th March 1968 in Diakonnissen hospital in Dusseldorf. His number is 23498018 and listed as a private in the RAMC, with a RA Pound, RAF Warrant officer listed as the informant.

If this information provides a lead I would be grateful for any guidance or information.

George

Hi George, armed with your Grandfathers Regimental Number it should be relatively simple to obtain his Service History from Glasgow:

Thanks for this

As the last location of Jack we know of was in the Diakonnissen hospital when he deceased I was wondering are there designated cemetaries for those who died in Germany post war, and who were not returned home?

George

We had a similar query a couple of years ago.

If your grandfather was a serving soldier he was almost certainly buried in the British Military Cemetery in Rheindahlen. We do have a contributor who lives in the area who may be to help with further information.

Once again, many thanks for this. I get the feeling that I am finally making progress so it is very much apprecriated.

I also hope that the contributor might be able to help.

My number was 23507230 and I enlisted in Jan 58. The number 23498018 is close and this must put enlistment around the same year.

It would have been unusual to have passed away in a German Hospital. RAF Hospital Wegberg was the usual place for treatment.

I was stationed in the area from Nov 61 to Aug 64. Those dying at that time and in that area would be interred at Rheindahlen which was the location of HQ BAOR.
