| In the Altstadt at Dusseldorf they had a shop selling roast chicken, it had a counter the full length of the shop and behind the counter, along the back wall was one huge wall of flame, the chickens on spits used to travel up the wall and down in front of the flames, most of the time it was open the queue would be out of the shop and right round the corner, must have sold hundreds each night, have never tasted a better chicken and don't think I ever will

| I don't know what they used to do to the chicken, I know it was basted as it went round, but it really was the best

| Les, A favourite of mine in the Altstadt was a place that did spanferkel (suckling pig) in a brotchen - delicious. BobG | |

| Shelldrake, Good question, well presented. Big knife applied to little pig - result fits in standard brotchen. BobG | |

| funny about the chicken, i too really liked it as mentioned, spit roast over flame, and thought i would never see the like again. i got "posted" to Moscow in 2000, and there, right outside the metro railway station was a caravan that had an almost identical set up , the wall of flame and chickes going round and round. they were about as good and became a firm favorite on the way home from work on a Friday | |

| I can't understand why it is not more widespread, before I joined up in the early 60s I used to spit roast chicken, (electric) and although it was well basted it just never tasted that good Les | |
