I'm trying to confirm that my father served in Munsterlager just after WW2 - up to about 1956. His name was George William Robinson.

Thanks for your reply, Major-General.
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure which regiment he served with, although I think it was the Royal Artillery. I know he had been to Burma during WW2.
My mother died recently and, amongst her possessions, we found a kind of pin-badge engraved 'Munsterlager'. I'd like to go there in the Spring on a kind of 'memorial journey'.

Hi Robbo, take no notice of these Scaleys no one of any note served with the CRS (apart from my Father in Law)! If your Dad served with the Gunners he may well have been in 3rd Regt RHA or 94 Locating Regiment, both Regiments were stationed in Dennis Barracks Munsterlager around that time. If you have his Regimental Number you can obtain his Record of Service from:-

www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Dennis Bks has now been "Civilianised" so you would have no problem exploring the place. I was over that way last May, flights to Hannover and car hire are relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for your replies gentlemen!
Over the weekend I have learned from my brother that my father was transferred to 94 OSB Regiment, Royal Artillery, on 12 August 1948 as a Lieutenant; and then to 204 Loc Bty Regiment, Royal Artillery, as a Captain on 1 February 1952.
He was in 1 Corps CB Staff Troop from 1 June 1952 - the unit was re-designated 9 CB Staff Troop RA from 15 August 1952.
My brother has even unearthed a picture of him and some of his colleagues.
Does this help to locate him at Munsterlager?
I'm sorry that so much of the 'technical' stuff here doesn't mean a lot to me and would be grateful for any help anyone can give me. I want to make sure that my 'memorial journey' in the spring is to the right place!
PS What's a 'Scaley'?

Hi Robbo,

94 (Observation) Regiment RA was the forerunner of 94 (Locating) Regiment RA. They have their own Website, with a potted history history, from its inception in 1914 until it was placed in to suspended animation in 1993. 9 CB, would be Counter Bombardment.

More info on 94 Regt can be found here:-

www.duffy-eu.com

As I say if you have your Fathers' Service Number you will be able to obtain his Service History from the Vets Agency in Glasgow.

PS: A "Scaley" (or Scaleyback) is a member of the Royal Corps of Signals, allegedly given the name due to the fact that when they carried radio batteries on their backs, the acid leaked out, giving them a "Scaleyback".

That`s the romantic version. It more probably came from the special pay SCALES that were introduced when the corps was formed..
Much the same as the RAF scaley (married men)

Thanks for all the information - I'm amazed!

I have one final request to make, though! As I said earlier, I'll be visiting Munster - and the Dennis Barracks (if I can find them) - in late March. I'll be getting there by train. Has anyone any advice about the town - hotels, transport, bars etc.

And where WERE the Dennis Barracks? Or should I make enquiries locally when I get there?

I'm really grateful for all your help.

PS I have been trying to upload a photograph of my father which was, we think, taken at the Barracks but I don't understand how to do it - or the system doesn't work with Macs!

Hi Robbo. As Munsterlager is quite a small place you should have no problem finding Dennis Barracks, most Taxi drivers should know where it is!! This site should be able to sort all your accommodation needs:-

web2.cylex.de/suche/deutschland/ort-munster/plz-/l1cyl-d_ort1cyl-munster-plz1cy1-_name1cyl-gastst%E4tte-s1.html

BTW, don't get Munster in North Rhein Westphalia confusted with Munsterlager in Lower Saxony. Smile
