Got a rather noisy reminder from our gunner friends.banging out a 21 gun salute in Edinburgh,that to day is HMs 60th year on the throne.

This day 60 years ago I was on draft and Orderly Cpl at the then Depot Regt, Pocklington .. I can remember the RSM coming into the Guard Room and telling us to put the flag at half staff as King George had died .. served the Queen until 1966, took part in the Munster Garrison Coronation Parade ... 'can I have a medal please' ... there are to be 60,000 Jubilee medals distributed in Canada to politicians, news readers, sports personalities, singers, actors etc .. all who are bloody well paid for what they do ..

Totally agree Len, but since when did the people at the grass roots, or the men on the ground actually doing the job get the praise (or medals)

I agree with you. I served HM for 20 years, so why in heavens are all the proposed celebs, council staff, civil servants etc going to be awarded the medal when a lot of them have done nothing to earn this award. Bah! it makes me sick with rage.

For what its worth, I was in my last term at Harrogate when the King died. Remember all the officers wore a black arm band and the King's portrait in the NAAFI was draped with black ribbon.

I was a mere child in P3on that day..We were assembled and the head teacher gave us the news.Didn`t really mean a lot to a 7 year old...

This was first Admin Parade at Birdwood Barracks (1952) .. note the officers are wearing black armbands in respect to King George

'uuum ... 'tis I Ciphers not jimsigs, and I can just be seen over the RP's left shoulder next to the Cpl with glasses.. I was parade centre marker so I'm not giving the 'eyes left' but looking straight ahead .. here's a better photo head on, I'm right marker .. 6 squadrons on parade .. some turnout

Major General George Prior-Palmer if memory serves me right replaced by Maj Gen Frances Mitchell in 1953.

Len, Prior-Palmer name rings a bell but I cannot say I ever run across him. I wonder if he ever had a relative in the old 7th Queen's Own Hussars. I know the CO's name when Iwas with them was Llewellyn-Palmer
