My late father, Lt. Col. the Revd. H. G. Tyler, RAChD, was Warden of Church House, Verden, from September 1957 to July 1958. I have always understood that what we knew as 'Church House' was used in the war to accommodate German V2 rocket scientists but I have no confirmation of that. I have four photographs from that time which I believe show Church House and neighbouring buildings. Can anyone identify any of these for me?

Nicholas

Welcome, another interesting challenge for the contributors to this site

I lived in Rotenburg about 30 miles from Verden in the early 50s and used to come shopping to the main NAAFI but have only very vague memories of the town, there are however a number of contributors including Steve who were either stationed there or lived there with their parents more information will doubtless follow.

An early contributor to this site plotted the current sites of a number of the locations of the former British BAOR Barracks on Google earth including the three in Verden, Caithness,Cavalry and Shield however none of these are on a river bank in relatively open country similar to the photos. I think therefore Church House must therefore have been a stand alone complex elsewhere in the area

I have a friend, the daughter of an Army Padre, who I think was also based in Verden in the mid 50s , I will contact her and see if she has any memories of Church House. However I shall be away from home for a fortnight so there will be a delay in any further response

I seem to remember from my time in Verden, both as a dependent (father stationed in Verden) and when I was stationed there 1958 - 1961, that Church House was not actually located in Verden but at Eystrup, same village as the GOCs residence. It was close to the River Aller and I have memories of spending a weekend there with the Scouts before I enlisted, we went fishing and only thing we caught was an eel.

Steve -The link you posted is to a contrbution of mine, Church House was not located in Cavalry bks. The nearest to a religious organisation in the Bks was the TocH.

JPW and Bob - I stand corrected thanks should have looked deeper - it looks like the HQ for 30 Corps (thanks JPW) later 30 Corps District before moving to Neinburg the HQ moved again before disbandment to Cavalry Barracks (not yet listed) Lüneburg the closest barracks to the town now have the street address and will investigate next time there - JPW has also confirmed the location for HQ 8 Corps District with my research of 1 Corps District so post May 45 is coming together slowly from the Districts downwards...
