| Maybe now my comrades from teeth armed units can understand why I found my short association with the Scaleys to be confusing ! Nice lads in the main, and some cracking skirted members in the squadron, too, but they had a different way of working........... Being capable of doing some basic map reading at least, and not being of much use in a technical role, I was tasked with doing a route recce for a move to our next location. I was given a Landrover, a driver & a comely lass in the back to work the comms. As we left the old location & to ensure we really were on net, I turned to the comely lass and said "OK Doris, tell control we are mobile for ....... (wherever it was) ". To give her her due, she acted swiftly, picked up a wad of message forms and insisted it was written down before she'd open up. Adamant she was, no paper work, no way ! But she was better company than some sigs I'd been landed with and she stood her round at the pub where we took a break. Just a pity the driver was playing gooseberry !

- Cartav,
I see you mention ack, ack. Now that's going back a few decades. Ack, Ack from a WW2 phonetic alphabet. (Ack, Beer, Charley, Don, etc) Then there was A = 'Able', now A = Alpha. The latter two covering my service 1949-72 Jimsigs1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- My service too, Jim, but the "Ack Ack" thing stuck for some reason until Light Ack Ack became Light Air Defence ...... for some reason again ! .... but now with an " LAD" bit tagged on, and that always pronounced " Ell Ay Dee", we could be confused with Bluebell. Once, at a rifle meeting, we were approached by a distraught 2/Lt who pleaded for assistance with a sick vehicle. I suppose replacement of guns with rocketry saved 16 Regt from being "Triple A" | |

| Yes - some happy, and equally unhappy memories of those far off days when we were all genuine Cold War Warriors until the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviets communism collapsed. I ws thinking about that US chap, Bradley Manning who was court martialled for all thsoe secrets he leaked to Wikileaks. Apparently Obarmary as outging POTUS has comuted her imprisonment. That is not tos ay that if she trangresses that she might be back in Fort Leavensworth to finish the 35 year sentance. Depends on what the new POTUS Don Chump decides on. Just proves the point back when Manning 'appropriated' all those military messages/telegrams probably onto a Memory stick. Proves that American Military signals security procedures were crap at that time, and probably still are crap. Some soldiers etc were allowed to plug in their I-Pads and cell phones into DOD (Department of Defence) classified computer system - a great NO No. A total breach of security, so it might be alleged. I doubt that the UK Military or MoD would allow similar slack behaviour in the UK Military where classified material on hard drives is concerned - but one never knows just how lazy some people can become to bypass SOPS. Would UK soldiers be allowed to have I-Pads and mobile phones in secure areas nowadays, or do they ahve to hand them over to the guardroom prior to commencing shift work? | |

| I haven't been on this Forum for a while, mostly post my military blah (memories) on ARRSE. I have also joined a 'Faceache' forum for Old Bleeps who served at 28 Sig Regiment (BR) during the 1960s like myself. Surprising how manya re still around, some have 'called time' and stood down. Some still attend reunions with old mates like myself who are now in their 70s. Tempest Fugit, time passes and has a habit of buggering us around as he years pass. What I like are some of the Veterans Breakfast Clubs that have been set up. I have been to a few for all 3 services for aget together and reminise on old times. The trouble is, my old car, like myself are having a few problems etc as the years pass. I cannot grumble I can still get around, lots of ex service personnel cannot get out due to health problemes etc. | |
