I wonder how many doors, in how many barrack rooms, will be banged open in the morning by a couple of drunken Sergeants, lugging a bucket of tea and a bottle of Myers rum ?
I wonder how many hung-over squaddies will be woken by those NCOs shouting, "where's yer 'kin mug lad ?" to have said mug half-filled with tea and topped up with rum ?
Did all regiments have that Christmas tradition, or was it just a Gunner thing?

Brum

An interesting thought

I wonder how many units still observe this tradition. With Christmas/ New Year stand down/ block leave and the Military Guard Force (civilian contractors) taken over Security duties in many Garrisons there are relatively few UK based soldiers on duty over the holiday period

I have memories of 'Gunfire', not sure how fond they are tbh...

Woken from the bliss of deep sleep to greet the worlds worst hangover and the blurred figure of someone in uniform thrusting a mug of tea heavily laced with rum into my hand as he bawled 'Merry Christmas' I would be sitting upright in bed only half conscious convinced I was still asleep and in some awful nightmare!

I don't remember much about Christmas mornings, having, usually over-imbibed the night before, but my memory has been jogged by the word "RUM".
Back in '57 (I think), Asian Flu was on the rampage in BAOR, and our Duty Sargeant woke us up one morning, asked us for our mugs, and proceeded to pour in a liberal amount of the stuff, then, offering us a couple of Codein tablets each, told us to "Get it down you!".
It Worked!
Don't know what the medical bods would say about it though, in these 'elf n safety days.
Happy New Year all!

I had the dubious distinction of being one of the first to succumb to the dreaded Asian 'Flu at Hereford.
I wouldn't fancy THAT again.

Hi there,
I think it died a death in my Regt. in the 90's but it was very common in the 80's, lots of the fun slowly died in the 90's, more's the pity.

We caught the Asian Flu in Newark late 1958 early 1959. We had two professional football teams mostly 1st Div and one of the YOUNG twins (played for Sheffield) asked me to play in the Wednesday sports day side. At Right back I inadvertently scored two against my own side and spent the next week in cookhouse spud peeling. After that I carried hot drinks to the majority of the camp who were seriously ill in bed. A few of us escaped. That Xmas we had the usual Officer and NCO supplied Rum and Tea. Splendid.

(ahem), . . . That should be "Dropshort", . . . you need a capital letter at the beginning. As in "Donkeywalloper".

You'll get the hang of it.
