I remember when in Boys Service, Troon around the early part of 1963 (after the snow had gone) preparing the Camp and ourselves for a VIP visitor. I think we spent the better half of a month drilling and cleaning for his eminence, the Regiment even went to the trouble of buying a vintage Rolls Royce to convey the aforesaid VIP from the Camp gates to the saluting dais. About two days before his arrival the Commanding Officer got a letter something along the lines of:

Dear All,

Sorry, but I have been caught with my pants down and had to resign so, won't be able to come and look down my nose at you after all. Hope you didn't go to too much trouble.

Your etc,

John Profumo
Secretary of State for Defence (Ret'd)

That VIP had visited us (TOS) in Sharjah and spent a convivial evening in our home made bar. Great company. I later met a mate who had spent some time in their hostel in the City.
Small world.

I remember Profumo coming out on a visit to Germany, early sixties I suppose.

At the time morale was pretty low but he improved our pay & conditions and a lot of new kit came to us as well.

He was a good Defence Secretary.

(Twos up on Christine, John !).

Aah, Mandy Rice-Davies !

She was a Brummie, you know, had aspirations to join the Gunners I believe but they wouldn't let her in, (well-with HER track record !).

This is a picture of Valerie Hobson (b1917 d1998) English film star and wife of John Profumo. She stood by him to the end. Cant help wondering why, but love is as they say, blind.
