Hi terry, I don't think we have any Guardsmen on the board. Yet, let's hope many more come and join us.

I am trying to find any Army family who lived in Lippstadt 1958/1964 we had families from 41Rgt RA and then 49Rgt RA also 22nd Signals Rgt. We lived in LessingStr.and one time we had the Gurka's with us. The Princess Royal came to Churchill Barracks about 1960 and we were lucky enough to be presented. The Padre was called Friend We used to woken up in the middle of the night and evacuated to the Army Kinema in trucks just in case we needed to move quick in case the Russians came. the German wives were terrifed we had to take enough food and drink for 24hrs. We were identified and back in bed in over a hour. We had a NAAFI at the barracks but the hightlight of our month was a visit to the Maple Leaf store at the Canadian barraks in Soest. Bonfire Night a Army bus took us up to the Barracks and there were fireworks.Fish and Chips and Burgers cooked by the Army cooks they were wonderful. Happy Happy Days. Shelagh

I'm trying to find anyone who was stationed at RASC HQ BFPO 31 Hamburg.
I was there 1956/58 as a Clerk and had a great time on camp and of course down town.

Welcome

Did you work in HQ RASC Hamburg District?

If so where was it? Uxbridge Barracks Blankenese? Steve and I would be very interested to know and any other unit locations you can remember from your time in the Hansastadt

Lance Sgt is more of a designation than a rank. A L/Sgt is equivalent to a Cpl,and in fact REME full Corporals after six months service attached to a Guards unit was accorded the Rank L/Sgt ,which had to be relinquished on a posting out.
A funny thing happened in the NAAFI one day. A REME Tech Cpl ,with less than 6-months service with the Guards unit was sitting in the NAAFI with his beret on, when he was scolded by the Duty Sgt ,a L/Sgt , for doing so. After removing his beret one of our REME mates informed the Tech Cpl that he was equal in rank to the Duty Sgt. The Tech Cpl replaced his beret on his head only to be pounced upon by the Duty Sgt again. The Tech Cpl told him in no uncertain terms to shove it. The Tech Cpl was charged, but charges were dropped when the CSM found out that the Tech Cpl was senior to the L/Sgt ,who was asked to apologise
to the REME full screw.

In 1956 I was recalled for the Suez Operation. I was Royal Signals attached the the 2 Btn Scots Guards, 1st Guards Brigade, 3 Infantry Div.
First morning on parade I naturally fell in with the other ranks as there were so many sergeants milling around.
A Scots Guards Sergeant named Garland said 'what are you doing in the ranks corporal, fall in as a supernumerary you're the same rank as my Lance Sgts and you have seniority over most of them'.
Felt great but I wasn't allowed any Mess privileges.

How sad Ciphers, not being allowed into the Sgts mess as a L/Sgt. You would be King of the Kids in the OR's mess then ! cheers

Re L/Sgt rank. I served with 1st Gds Bde Signal Sqn stationed in Winterbourne Gunner 1959-62. We had a couple of L/Sgts in the R Signals and an ACC L/Sgt as well.

Prior to that whilst serving with the 7th Queens Own Hussars at Kandahar Barracks Tidworth 1957-9, the 7th Hussars were handing over their barracks and moving down to another barracks further down in Tidworth. Whilst Chelsey barracks was being renovated, a couple of Gds Battalions moved to Tidworth and a party of Gds personnel came to size up our Sgts mess for alterations.
They eventually knocked a hole in the wall of the Sgts mess dining room to fabricate a separate dining room for Lance Sgts would you believe. So that they ate their meals seperately from the rememnder of the Sgts mess !!!.
You couldn't make it up if it was not true.

I am playing golf with the current Drum Major of the Coldstreams on the 20th and will ask about the status of LSgts today. He is a country member of our club, his parents live almost next door to the club.
