Well Shelldrake this is where I send her Christmas card .. I tried to pin her down to a localisation I could relate to, but the names I recalled did not ring a bell with her. She originally came from London, married a Turkish guy and moved to Cyprus.

It's not far from us in Kyrenia, Len. Quite easy to find on Google Earth, Goenyeli is a district to the North of Nicosia (in)famous for a Greek/Turkish battle during the '74 conflict. Type in Nicosia and then Efsane Sokak, Goenyeli, simple.Smile

Done and diddled ... I've just about finished a book based on Cyprus and the EOKA days, it's fictional of course, involving a former squaddie who was there in the 50's and his subsequent return to one by one knock of a particular EOKA cell responsible for his buddy's death.

Morning Len (7.40am here) At the risk of sounding like a nosey git...How did you end up in BC? I have two or three old mates who live over there, two in Med Hat one in Vancouver, they met & married Canadian girls while posted to BATUS and although you got around a bit I see you were never posted to Canada.

I decided on BC in 1966, Vancouver to be exact. I was fairly unhappy with the UK, Labour government etc, place seemed to be going to the dog's, still had bomb sites in Southampton and I really couldn't see a bright future for my two boys. I had read a couple of books about the Province of BC and decided that it was either there or New Zealand that I would grace. I was offered a job in NZ but decided that I didn't like the labour style government they had in place at the time and housing was pretty ridiculously priced, about £2.10 per square foot in old money so I turned it down. Have never regretted my decision, arrived at Vancouver at 11pm 5 July 1966, 8am the next morning 6 July, reported to Immigration, 2pm had job interview .. got job, started work 8 am 7 July and stayed there until retirement in 1999, some 32 years. Would have stayed on but my wife Mary was diagnosed with terminal cancer so I quit work to spend full time with her. And there my friend is how I answer your straight forward question .. with a bloody epic.

Thanks Wilf, but unfortunately my present wife Mavis who was my first wifes best friend, has herself been hit for the second time with cancer after 9 years in remission. She is soldiering on and undergoing a course of chemotherapy to be followed by radiation.
