The Mystery of the Missing Franklin Expedition Ships

      The recent headline story in the Waterloo Region Record published in Kitchener, Ontario on 10 Sep 2014 may lead to the closure of the tragic events surrounding the loss of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror on their fabled search for the elusive North West Passage in the Canadian Arctic in 1845.
      The following  pictures show the recent exciting discovery of one of the two missing ships in  the ice bound arctic.

Thank you for this, there was brief mention of the recent developments in some of the British Press but nothing substantive.

This should be incredibly interesting to anyone who is interested in history n general, and also in Artic and Royal Naval history in particular. I find books written by explorers, or historical autobiographies interesting. As a youngster I was brought up on the stories of Scott of the Antarctic, and also the explorations in search of the North West Passage across the top of the Canada. If these wrecks are ever investigated further it will be interesting as to what caused them to sink, but more than likely it was the crushing power of ice in those northerly regions on vessels that just were originally designed for sea going and not for ice exploration.

I found the written accounts of the 'Endurance' disaster when Shackleton took that vessel south to Antarctica. I was also fascinated by the the way the survivors lived unil they were all rescued - a real feat of endurance.

The British survival expert, Ray Mears has also made programs about survival in these high regions of Canada, and he makes it all look so easy.

This is indeed interesting. I have a book somewhere (called 'Frozen in Time' I believe) which is very informative and details the survival attempts and deaths of the crew of one of the Franklin Expedition vessels. I must dig it out and read it again!
