Wilfred Brown 6th Battalion Royal Artillery

Good morning,

I am looking for information regarding my grandfather Wilfred Brown 6th Battalion Royal Artillery who sadly passed away on 25/03/62 in Germany while on duty ( Road accident) he is buried at the Hanover Military Cemetery, I would love any information, photos of him & his regiment as myself & my father
didn't know he existed until a few months ago.

As your Grandfather died In Service post 1948. It is possible he is not listed!  If this is the case? Come back to me.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your reply, I have found his grave and managed to get a photo of this, unfortunately that's all the information I have, I found a newspaper article in the Belfast telegraph about his parents receiving a telegraph about his death, thats how I found his Battalion....I have just ordered his birth certificate, but was hoping to find his death certificate but because it was during service I'm not sure its that easy!
I am also wondering why he wasn't brought back to Ireland and buried there?

You should find information via the GRO, even when he died in Germany. I'll have a look for you.

His Dob will help!

I have some info for you. the source is faded. Yes, you can order thru the GRO for a Death Cert.  The Index No is (2)  (12)

He was based at Muenster. Please note this Muenster or the German Version Münster. (2 dots over the U) and NOT Munster. Which is often typed incorrectly!

The burial at Hannover was maybe because he had the accident there, OR because he was taken to the big British hospital there., called (BMH Hanover).

You asked about location of burial in Germany and not Ireland. This was normal in those days. I believe if parents wished so, and there was a cost to them I think.  I am aware it was allowed in later years?

That's brilliant, I have just ordered his death certificate thank you so much for your help, apparently Wilfred was married with a surname brown finding that would be a needle in a haystack!!

Munster (Oertze) also known as Munsterlager (no Umlaut) was 70 km north of Hannover.  6 Regiment Royal Artillery was stationed there until mid 1962 in Dennis Barracks.  British Artillery were not arranged in Battalions at this time (USArmy used that formation) British Artillery were in Regiments and sub divided in lettered or numbered batteries (Bty)
