Here are some photos from my Hobart Barracks time. Hope these will be accepted.
I say this as they are on a completely different subject as you will see.
I was doing my rounds as the young i/c guards for the vehicle park one evening and noticed up in the corner of one of the hangers a large tarpaulin covering something !!
Like you do I investigate. Underneath I see this Motor-bike and side car. WOW. Now being a m/Cycle fan the following morning I make enquirers.
I was told by the M.T dept it belonged to a RTR man who was at that very time in the local Guard room awaiting to return to the UK (Colchester ) for a prison sentence.
I then go to his RHQ and speak to the chief-clerk .He tells me if I go to the Guard-room I may speak to him regarding this matter.
So off to the guard room. I am given permission by the provost Sgt who arranges the meeting.
The Soldier ...no names is delighted that I have made enquirers about the M/bike and said all the paper work is with his wife down in the Town.(Detmold).
So he agrees to a sale and I offer him a fair price and he OK's this. He speaks to the Sgt and a telephone call is made to his wife who agrees to see me the next morning.
Next day I call and see the good lady, she in turn shows me all the paper work. All in order so I give her the said amount in German D.M's.
All singed up off I go.Again call in the guard room speak to the Provost Sgt to clear the release of the M/cycle and inform the RTR man all is in order and his wife has the monies.
Next day I take the m/cycle over to the LAD workshop and start to really look at what I have purchased. With the help of the German foreman (who by the way looks after The Brigadier's
Opel Kapitan staff car) My Boss.
So here I am with my Zundapp 600 cc motor bike,we get her running .No problems at all.Now I did not want the side car which I add is a Steib and as the bike is in super condition.
He the foreman says he can sell the side car for me.I agree and we take it off.I sold the side car to a garage in Detmold for a very good price.Gave The foreman a good %.
I used the bike a great deal rode all over visiting my Germany friends which we had made while living in the BAOR from as you know 1946-1954.
I did eventually bring back the M/bike to the UK (see customs form) re registered it and sold it on.Did VERY well.
