RAMC History

Does anyone have, or know of, a reasonable book that gives RAMC units and their locations?

I am trying to track down dates and locations of a couple of Field Ambulance units, plus one added this evening, and am getting nowhere fast.

Paul-In the Locations section under Oxford Barracks Munster in the RAMC entry is "5AFC".

I am reliably informed by somebody (the wife) who worked there from 1978 to 1980 that the unit was 5 Field Force Field Ambulance (5FFFA). Is this an alternative or is 5AFC correct?

5 Field Force Field Ambulance was in Munster when I served with them in 1979-80.

29 ArmouredField Ambulance was at Obernkirchen in the 60/70's

I have made some amendments to the Oxford Barracks page, although I have not included a reference to a Field Force Ambulance. It would be good if I could get some concrete proof of the title, as the only one i can find a reasonable reference to is 6 FFFA.

I need treatment

Still trying to track down RAMC units In particular, at the moment, the following:-

28 Fd Ambulance - Which Barracks was it in in Hohne?
29 Fd Ambulance - When was 29 Fd Amb in Hildesheim, when did they move to Hohne, and which Barracks in both areas?
30 Fd Ambulance - What happened to 30 Fd Amb? What was the Barracks in Bad Lippspringe called? When were they there?
31 Fd Ambulance - Where were 31 Fd before Munster?

And when (if they did) was the amalgamation of 28 Fd and 29 Fd into 1 ADFA? Was it the same time as 7 Fd and 31 Fd became 2 ADFA? (or was it when they became 5 Fd Amb,,,, or was it 5 AFA,,,, or was it 5 FFA,,,, or 5 FFFA).

All I know at the moment is that all these "F's" are driving me slightly F batty

30 fld amb moved to Sennelager many many years ago it was in part of Normandy Bks to start with but was a new bks on the Staumüle str it was renamed Talbot Bks if Iremember in the 1980's what the medical unit is called today I dont know ,the bks in B Lippspringe were in the Spa clinics if they had names I dont Know and all the people that I knew who were there have died ,however I know the Towns archivist when I see him next I'll ask him if he has any info

Paul a point on 30 Fld amb, one of the late C.O:s a Col Paddy O' Dwyer (is that spelt right was the founder of the sennelager golf club,& was responsible for building it in the 1960's

As far as I can find there was a relatively short lived organisation within 1(BR) Corps - 5 Field Force. I think that it existed between about 1977 and 1982, with the HQ in Quebec Barracks, Osnabruck.

In which case (I am sure someone will put me right), 5 Fd Amb was formed on the demise of 31 Fd Amb in 1976, became 5 FFFA in 1977, 5 Armd Fd Amb in 1982 (on the demise of 5 Field Force), and finally back to 5 Fd Amb in 1993 when it moved back to the UK.

Still trying to confirm where these two units were, especially in Hohne. I have given up on the others for the moment.

between 1976 and 1978,a lot of units were renamed[but not actually moved]during the governments attempt at getting rid of brigades and introduceing field forces,dave.

Hi, new to this forum. Served with 30 Fd Amb before and during its change to 3 Armd Div Fd Amb. Had some interesting COs as well! Have lost track of RAMC since I left (1988). Anyone know if MRS Rheindahlen still there?

For my own part, anything you can say or send about 30 Fd Amb will also be most welcome. It may take a time to get it up on the main site, but it will arrive there eventually.

I was at 30 Fd Amb from 1972 - 1976 and again for another 3 year tour in the early 1980's when it became 3 Armd Div Fd Amb. We had a posh parade and all. Even the cooks had to put their 'No 2's' on (they were not happy!). It was around that time that it was named Talbot Bks after one of the DGAMS. Hardly ever used that name because if you wanted to go to/from the barracks the Taxi drivers only knew it as 'Der MRS' because the MRS Sennelager was co-located there. It was, without doubt, my favourite postings during my service. So many stories - so little room! Given that there was 100+ serving personnel there from cooks to reme, re, rct and medics I am surprised that there are not more entries about this. Where is this main site that you mention?

I may have put this on another forum but I was in 7 Fld Amb who were in Prestatyn Barracks from 158-1961 they left there to go to Roberts Barracks in 1970 where they stayed at the north end of camp then on amalgamation to 2ADFA with 31 Fld Amb in 1974 when I rejoined them acroos from 3 RHA RA near the swimming pool these are the only Fld Amb units in Osnabruck but yes HQ 5 Fld Force was in Osnabruck.
