| Hi All,
Only just joined this forum.
I joined RCT in August 1965, just after the changeover from RASC. First posting was 17 Port regiment, Marchwood, Southampton. Then off to Essen, then Rheindahlen (68 car coy). Then finally back to Ripon.
I need some help hear please. As I'm retired now, after many years as a Driving Instructor. I'm planning a Train/Tent holiday around Europe. I want to re-visit my old camp in Essen as I have many good memories of the place. The trouble is, I can't remember exactly where it was. I know it was called the Wood Casern (camp in the woods), but thats all. This is really annoying me as I can remember all the other camps quite vividly, and I spent most of my time in germany at Essen. (Age plays funny tricks!).
One good memory I do have. Maybe there are some RA members here who were there. In about '68 a few of us went on exercise with the RA (sorry, can't remember which Reg.), from Dortmund to Angelsea (North Wales). I pulled a ground to air missile plus ammo in the back of the wagon. We had a convoy about a mile long (great fun going through London!). The Army rented about 7 Townsend car ferries to get us all across. Anyone else here on that trip?
Finally, does anyone know if there is a ham radio net/group for RCT?
Sorry for the excessively long post, I'll keep them short from now on.
Regards

| Not a long post at all Peter - some of these buggers ramble on for ages - its an age thing with most of them. You were in Southampton 1965 (my home town) - 1966 I was off to Canada. There are bound to be someone on this site with the knowledge and info you are looking for - quite a knowledgable bunch actually, well the Royal Signals contingent any way. Welcome to the Group - when the rest wake up you will be sickened by their platitudes, which will not be as sincere as mine. (Tin Hat on)

Welcome
Not much to go on but you could have been stationed in Crookenden Barracks Essen which was located in the Essen suburb of Kuperdreth and was home to a number of Gunner Regiments in the 1950s
Details can be found off the Locations page of the Main Page of this site. | |

| Hi Len & JPW,
Many thanks for the welcome and advice.
I've just posted another note on the Locations/Essen thread, so hopefully someone watching that may be able to help.
