I've just left Essen and know the Barracks in Esssen-Kray well.
Up to 2 years ago it was home to a Bundeswehr Signals Regiment specialising in SHF directional communication for telephone and FAX ( 2.5 GHz frequencies). [had a radio ham friend there who served with the Sigs Regt].

Will try to find out more about the history.

Not to be confused with the other barracks in Essen in Essen- Kupferdreh which was the HQ for the Allied City Commandant of Essen directly after WW2. This barracks was used as a Military Hospital until 2000 by the Bundeswehr and is now demolished and turned into a housing estate.

Hi Lanka.

I wonder if you can help me with my quest. I was stationed at Essen between late 1967 and early 1969, and have lots of good memories of the surrounding area, and had some happy times there. I am planning a trip to Germany and want to re-visit this, and another camp in Rheindahlen that I was at . The problem is, I can't remember exactly where it was or the name of the camp.

It was a predominantly RCT camp (with REME workshops of course!). We all called it the 'camp in the woods'.

I've no idea if it's even still there, would be nice to find out though.

Any info you can give would be very helpful.

Regards
