Saville

Welcome.

Steve is the expert on the Aachen area and will confirm that the British Army presence in the Aachen area was very brief and the Belgian army assumed responsibilities for the majority of Occupation duties.

However I know that the fathers of three of my contemporaries at King Alfrd School Ploen, and members of the Control Commission Germany, had spent sometime in Aachen as part of the British Frontier Service endeavouring to control the legal passage of goods between the neighbouring countries of Belgium, Holland and the British Zone of Germany (black market smugglng of goods was rife in 1945/1946)

Your aunt must have been part of that organisation.

Will contact you privately with more information.

PS I, and doubtless others, would be delighted to see a selection of your photos.

Hi
Thanks for info
Here are 4 photos about which I know nothing.
I have a postcard that my aunt received with the address in Aachen.
That’s all I know, and this was dated November 1946. So she was serving between 1946 and 1948 at least.
Any help or info will be great fully received.

To add to JPW’s post

In Mar 46 the Belgium Army relieved the Guards Division in Aachen

227 (L/R) Military Government Detachment was situated at Theaterplatz Aachen in Oct 45 but cannot confirm if still there by Nov 46, this unit was responsible for a number of smaller detachments in the Aachen region

From Oct 46 there was a unit “British Troops 1 Belgium Corps area” that would have provided administration until disbandment Dec 47, assuming this is when the Belgium Army took over completely
