Roberts Barracks

Sadly I agree, I think we'll see a bid draw down in the Rhein Army.

I would like to answer a question asked on page 1 of this thread about the stables in Roberts barracks. It was a garrison stables for the use of soldiers and their families. It was staffed by volunteers from various surrounding regiments. I was seconded there from HQ 25 Regiment in 67 or 68. It was run at that time by Pat Malone of the KOSB. There was also Pat Feeney (not sure of the spelling) a guy we called odd job from, I think, a Dorset regiment, a scouser from the tank regiment and a guy called Dave from REME. Great days in retrospect. Love to hear from Dave if you happen to read this!

RE EAGLE

Their were originally two eagles on the gateway at Blacker Barracks; really the annex to Roberts Barracks. It was used by the Wermacht as a Garrison Bakery among other function.s. When the King's Shropshire Light Infantry passed through in 1945 they liberated one of them. It is now inside Copthorne Barracks, Shrewsbury. Sadly also due to close. I recall being a member of the Mess when 7 Fd Amb RAMC changed role to 7 Armd Fd Amb in about 1975. All Mess members received a glass memorial tankard.

7 Fd Amb was my admin unit from Aug 1973 to May 1976.


The RE Officers Mess had a minstrels gallery inset in the balustrade was the initial "RE" the previous occupants had "SS" there.

The 12 Mech Bde flash is based on a Shinto temple sybol from the days when12 Inf Bde fought in the Far East.

Looking at the large aerial photo with locations in yellow; in my days 1951-1955 it was the home of 37 and 38 Army Engineer Regiments.
37 AER was in the barracks marked as 25 Corps ER; and 12 Sqn was block 12, my block 40 Field Sqn. 39 Sqn was our 41 Field park Sqn
The NAAFI block was our cook house and the YMCA was our NAAFI [in addition to the one in town]
I don't remember the gym
37 AER arrived in Osnabruck late 1950 and most left for Cyprus in 1955

I left Osnabruck September 1952 when I was posted to Movement Control at Longmoor; UK postings accommodation not as good as BAOR plus that temptation to go home as many weekends as possible and the boring train journeys, not so much fun

37 RHQ not sure which block they were in; strange but we had very little to do with anyone outside our squadron of about 150 men

37 RHQ were in block 20, right next to the main gate. 2 ADER/25 Eng Regt also used block 20 as RHQ.

We were just the same, limiting contact to those in the squadron, or those we worked with on joint tasks with other squadrons.

There is also a civilian group on Facebook of Osnabruck Garrison 1945 to 2009. Lots of ex squadies and wives of deceased forces personnel, as well as civilian employees. It's a nice group with loads of photos shared. Might be worth your thinking about Facebook for that.

For the record:
37 AER comprised HQ in block 20, 40 Field Sqn in block 12, 41 Field Park Sqn in block 10; with 33 and 34 Sqns in either block 16 or 18. Our cookhouse was block 15
Our NAFFI was upstairs block 19, I think the chapel was downstairs block 19.
Sick Rooms were block 44, over in 38 AER territory

Block 16 was the Sergeants mess and training wing/cinema

44 was the church. The Nissen hut burnt down, so they built a brick church before I got there in 1980

Medical centre was 34. One of the dentists was a Colonel, who was a right miserable arrogant git. Used to push your lip into your teeth instead of asking you to open wider.

Current view of the Winkelhausen Kaserne, including the giant Kaffee Partners building in the area of Block 3/ REME square.

All the blocks along An Der Netter Heide have been preserved, and had insulation applied to the outside. They are now used by Osnabruck city council, tax office, etc. The old Court Martial block (block 5) is now Osnabruck Police station.

I can only presume that they've kept 25's cookhouse (15) due to a protection order on the cockroaches

Thanks for current aerial shot
Good to see my old home Block 12 still standing, also our cookhouse, the cockroaches should have eaten everything by now including grease of the floors

Had something like burger and chips one night. Half way through the chips and found a fried cockhroach on the plate :/

Loaded a chest freezer onto a 4 tonner once to take on range camp. The guys dropped it on the wagon and roaches flew out from everywhere

Your photo shows Building 37. 37 was on the extreme north side of the camp. Whilst I was there in 1980, it was used by the Intelligence Corps, but think someone else might have been in there before that
