Google Maps Steet View

Just a quick heads up to say that Google Maps Street View now has Germany online. It's very extensive but Bielefeld, Berlin, Hannover and the Ruhr area are on.

Thanks Jal, off to peek at Bielefeld now.

Had a look at Dortmund, I notice that the Nordpol has been demolished which is a bit of a relief as I had a "Deckel" in there from 1974!

When I discovered Google's satellite images of Soest a few years ago it was great...of course those weren't "live", like I originally thought, but nevertheless, wandering around in them and seeing a bird's eye view of my old haunts was pretty cool.

My understanding of Street View is it's...well....a street eye view, like being a pedestrian or something, which would be kinda neat too.

How does one access it? I'm thinking web addy here.....

My son just put me onto a street we used to live on in Dortmund, Stephen.

Typing in the street name on" google maps" takes you to a map with a pointer indicating the spot you want.
Clicking on that pointer gives you access to "Street View."

Just go to www.google.com and select maps. There's a little figure in the top left and if you drag it onto the map, any available street views are shown in shaded blue.

Bielefeld has Jim, my Brother lives up over the hill in Bielefeld-Brackwede and when I pop over every so often it is a changed place. Jahnplatz where all the trams met in the city centre is completely different and so are other bits like the Hauptbahnhof and Berliner Platz!

thanks, brum.....I hadn't thought that specifically about it, but of course. What I was thinking more along the lines of was a 'street level' view of the existing satellite view one gets off google. I assume, however, if I typed in "Kanadischer Weg" for Soest I could then "travel" up along that street, turn down this one, wander over to that one yadda yadda yadda....what fun!!

I also assume the street view, like the old satellite view, is not "real time" but....hmmm...pre-recorded (gawd, am I dating myself with terminology or what!).
