My father was Bill Adam from Bonhill. He was serving L/C in 1st Batallion GH at Meeansee Barracks Essen Kray. He married a local girl, Ilse Wochnik in December 1948. Witnesses were James and Hannelore Leggat. Marriage conducted by Rev MacKenzie. Parents both deceased now. Would like to know more about my father's army experiences.

1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders – Muna Barracks Zeven to Meeanee Barracks Essen
7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders merged with 1st Battalion at Essen

Feb 47 – 153th Infantry Brigade formed 6th Infantry Brigade of the new 2nd Infantry Division

thanks to both respondents to date - Steve, I would be very interested in seeing a copy of the regimental newsletter of the period. I have my fathers release book which show he was called up on 16th Jan1947 and discharged on 19th Feb 1949. I am pleased to report that his military conduct is recorded as "very good". His army number was 19125156. He was a few days short of his 21st birthday when discharged. We were not a military family before then and am not sure why it was the Gordons he joined rather than a more local regiment. He evidently wasted little time in fraternising with the locals, and I dont know whether my birth in Nov48 and his marriage in Dec48 would have led to an earlier than usual discharge. I recall him telling me he was a driver and a decent boxer while in the army (although I am sure he probably exaggerated his sporting qualities!). Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my post. Bill
