| Talking promotions, here's one for you old & bold........
Saw "The Guns at Batasi", again & in part, today. Always wondered why it didn't get better reviews or why Richard Attenborough didn't get more credit for his role as RSM........ Thing is, all NCOs & officers addressed him as "Sgt. Major", which seemed odd to an ex Gunner only used to RSMs being called "Mister". Recall one parade where our newly appointed Colonel finished off with "Carry on, Sgt. Major !". RSM stood fast, immobile. We'd be there yet if the 2 i/c hadn't whispered the correct format in the CO's ear.
So query is, are RSMs addressed differently in other regts., or was the film
wrong ? Come to think about it, if the African unit had 40mm L70s to play with, they should have been Gunners, anyway. | |
