| Pinky
Welcome and thank you for the info on your old Regiment
If you go to the home page of this site, click on Locations and then Munster you will find a complete list of the British Regiments who are believed to have been based in York Barracks from 1945 till closure in 2008 (including the units you name)
However anything you can add to the stories of life in Munster will be more than welcome

| Does anyone who served at HQ 20 Armoured Brigade, York Barracks, Munster remember the Corporals Club that was on the ground floor of the Signals Block. To us guys in 1952/3/4 it was our refuge from the rest of the motley crew. The day I arrived at 4 Sqn Signals there was a flood in the QM Stores and it was relocated to the right hand end of the barrack block. The old stores languished in disrepair for about 6 months when a bunch of us Signals and Bde HQ corporals approached the Brigade Major with a view of turning it into a Corporals Club. Not only did he OK it but said it would be paid for out of PRI Funds. After a ton of work, that entailed renovating, painting, even relaying the parquet flooring that had just about been destroyed by the water, the Club, that included a very well appointed bar and a separate room for dances etc was opened with great fanfare, and it soon became a favourite watering hole for non coms from Brigade HQ and the 17/21 Lancers who were the resident regiment at York Barracks at the time. Boy was I sorry to leave 20 Armoured Brigade, the absolute best posting I ever had.

| The information for Oxford Barracks in Munster needs updating. I was stationed there from 1948-60 and the 1st Battalion, The Seaforth Highlanders were the Infantry Battalion in residence (from 1957-1961) before they returned to the UK to be almagametd with the Cameron Highlanders firming the Queen's Highlanders (Cameron and Seafort). I served in the RAPC attached to the Seaforths Jim Brown | |

| I notice a typo in my message. I was stationed at Oxford Barracks Munster from 1958-60 I was happy serving the Crown for two years National Serviice - not twelve years! Jim Brown | |

| Padre Jim
Welcome
Unfortunately owing to currently insurmountable technical problems we cannot amend the original data base for Munster. (the team has a vast amount of data to be added).
However our knowledge of Munster in the late 1950s is limited, Anything you can add would be very welcome especially the names of the Regiments based on the Loddenheide complex the other side of the city.

Interested in your comments regarding Buller Barracks
A decade later the units in the Loddenheide complex comprised two Foot Guards Battalions, the 13/18th Hussars and the Brigade REME Workshops. 8 Regiment RCT were the otherside of town in Portsmouth Barracks

| Thanks for that JPW.
On a slightly different topic... When at Belfast Bks, our local bar was known as "Mickies Bar".
What was the nearest bar to Maresfield bks, in Herford?
The name "Café Smidt" seems to ring a bell.
Or was that in Munster? | |

Soon to move to Barnard Castle, County Durham. (A whole new can of worms which I don't think has been touched upon on this site !).

| This took place shortly after I'd left the regiment Somebody high up figured that it would be more economical to move a brigade, (I think it was a brigade), to UK then deploy them, via civilian ferries to BAOR for exercises. I've never heard of any other formations having this inflicted on them, maybe it was an experiment. | |
