Hi all,

Here is a blast from the past. Whilst I was serving in BAOR Signal Regiment in Herford 1952-4, anyone using a radio had to have a licence. This was for my radio I constructed at the Army Apprentices School Harrogate.
Here is that Licence :-

Wireless Licence BAORWirelessLicence-1

I've still got the radio as well.

Hi Gordon,

I havn't had a look and don't know whether it is still working. I seem to remember that the radio was called the Premier. They had a shop along the Edware Road. They made two kits. One was a TRF set the other was the Superhetrodyne. We could only afford the TRF and we paid for that on a weekly basis. Think it worked out to around £9. My late Dad did play around with it to get more sound out of it etc.

Gordon,

Re the crystal set, I made one of those as a school boy in Cheltenham around 1946. My late Mother bought it from Robinsons the Radio shop. Had a paxalene base, large coil with a slider on top for selecting station, one ear piece and the crystal. Had to have very long earth and aerial wires - and it worked. Use to tune into Radio Luxembourg (208 meters)

Memories, Memories

Gingerjim,

I can remember the glass accumulators which I had for a big battery radio my Uncle purchased 2nd hand whilst I was living in Cheltenham - 1946/7. Used to take them to the local garage for charging in exchange for another charged up one. Remember coming back one day swinging the thing from side to side, and thinking nothing of it. A couple of days later, my new long trousers started to fall apart. Did 'narf get a belting for that.

That brings back memories. The accumulaters went to Stagg the ironmongers and the rags went to Morells flea pit.No chance of cheating as the miserable git turned them out to see what was there.
