| In view of some of the camera angles at last night's ceremonies at the Albert Hall, one might be forgiven for thinking that there are more females than lads in the ranks these days.......
And on a lighter note on a serious subject, l recall being on parade one Armistice Day. The city's military were all lined up properly, the British Legion standard bearers, male & female, were in a semi-circle beside the memorial. At the solemn bit, flags were lowered in unison. Unfortunately, one old dear gripped the pole too near the centre, the end caught up in her skirt and treated the common soldiery to a full blown view of passion killer bloomers. It was to their credit that sniggers in the ranks were stifled to an acceptable level.

This is going too far, causing too much excitement ! Maybe....... can't remember after 40 years, but then, in the distant past, something like the illustration was standard issue. something which didn't deserve the " passion killer" description.

People really don't forget, do they ? Brought us back to reality Brum ! With much of the ceremonial revolving around 11th November & WW1, it's surprising how many get caught up in the occasion....... those four years of conflict are more remote from the present generation as the Crimean War is to mine. In not too many years, there'll be a search to dig out the last surviving squaddy of WW2 then, with fewer remembering the blackout & rationing, interest in Remembrance Day might diminish. When memorial plaques are harvested for scrap, when poppies have been burned in the street and not so long ago when a council banned military parades. maybe it's already waning. We'll still have wars, no doubt, names will still be inscribed on Rolls of Honour in public places. but not in the profusion of earlier days, thank God. Whilst friends and family of the fallen are still around, they'll be remembered. But there are others, those maimed by bullet & EOD. Maybe, in future, when names on memorials have little impact on the general public, we should ensure that more attention is given to the disadvantaged survivors.

| Both Gordon ! Desert gear seems to have taken over for formal parading, but it hardly seems suitable stuff for UK. And I remember we still retained Mk. 8s for 0.22 shoots when SLR came in, but they disappeared when SA 80 arrived. Still, both in the pic, the smart youngster & the sgt. with one of headdress items you all despise,. are likely to be CCF, & I know nowt about them.
And a query....... I didn't notice the guard around the Cenotaph in detail, but can they reverse arms in normal fashion with the shorter SA 80 ?

| The lad lives in Newcastle under Lime (Westfield) so the pic was possibly taken there. I think the RA bod is a cadet officer. I also noticed the rifle sling was loose and no magazine, so I'm supposing it was a posed photo for grandad .. none the less .. look at the bulled shoes.

Len (Ciphers) Newcastle's not far from me. It's been a while since I fired the .22 and ours had the Parker-Hale sight. I'm pretty sure they were single shot too. That sling looks like the one used on the GPMG !

Right again Brum........... Mk 8 Enfield was 0.22 single shot, there was no mag. Parker Hale sights maybe.... every one I shot had screw adjusted leaf sights like the better No. 4s. Don't know about the sling, but it ain't for rifles. I notice the lad's woolly pully sleeves though........ that's a neat way of making them shorter when the QM chucks a one-size-fits-all bit of kit at you !
The RA badged chap in the background is a sgt....... stripes on his sleeve, no Sam Browne and he's got the white lanyard of shame which was only worn by non- commissioned ranks.
