| 1965 Our unit wore overalls black belts, gators with matching gleaming brass cleaned back and front daily. I did nearly (only once) make stick man and lost on a question, did my stags on the odd occasion we would hide in a boiler house at 0400 on a freezing January morning on the North German plains. One guy got caught the OO said "what are you doing down here soldier" ? I am checking the time SIR". I'll give you some F***ing time son 14 days march out is what he got

| Guard Duty and on the Guard mounting parade, the soldier judged by the Orderly Officer to be "Stick Man" was dismissed from the parade and excused Guard duties for that night. I seem to remember guys carrying their mate down to the square on (Tables six foot folding) so as they would not bend the crease in their BD Trousers. | |

| Re:- Stick man.WHILST SERVING WITH L.A.D. R.E.M.E.attached to 49 th Fld Regt R.A.in Hong Kong we always had a Cfn on guard mounting and 9 out of 10 times he ended up as stick man, the result would be that the young duty officer doing the guard inspection would approach him after and ask if he could get a spare part for his car i.e. headlight bulbs, rotor arms ht leads etc.as a reward for being picked stick man.How do i know this well i was the storeman for the L.A.D. Unit. NUFFSED. | |

| What they didn,t realise was that we had no way of getting into the F.A.M.T.O. stores to reciprocate as the keys were held by the O.C.of the L.A.D. Anyway most of the officers were sprogs of N S. COMMISSIONS.THEY NEVER LEARNED. | |

| My first Regimental Guard happened on a Saturday.
Having been assured that there was "loads of time before Guard Mounting" I was persuaded to hoof it into Nienburg for a few bevvies. While pouring Lindener into my (un-accustomed) 18 year old stomach I also devoured a bockwurst.
Arriving back in camp I fell asleep on my pit, to be woken by the local soldiery who dressed me appropriately and got me to the Guard Mounting parade.
Standing behind the Guard Commander I suddenly discovered that I didn't like bockwurst and that I should get rid of it in a nearby flower bed. My request to the Guard Commander was denied whereupon I promptly threw up on the aforementioned bombardier's boots.
The rest of the guard thought I was doomed, so did I.
Incredibly I was made Stick Man and after getting the guard's supper, was bedded down for the night.
How I got away with it I don't know but nevertheless the story is true.
(That's the only bloody Stick Man I ever managed to get !).
