| I've been giving a hand at the local (Mennonite) Thrift Store. At times they get various military memorabilia, which isn't recognized for it's past history or value. Mennonites are a pacifist so aren't really to well informed about military subjects. So, any how I have three patches I'm trying to identify. The fourth one is the red patch which of course was 1st Cdn Div and I wore that up until 1967 and has come and gone on the whim of DND since then. Any body out there can assist me I'd appreciate it. | |

A quick response to your query
Agree with you that the square patches are Canadian Division flashes of WW2 vintage
According to my working notes complete list is as follows
1st Infantry Division Red 2nd Infantry Division Blue 3rd Infantry Division Grey 4th Armoured Division Green 5th Armoured Division Maroon
Oblong version requires further research

The colour combination of the oblong version looks like that of the WW2 RCAMC but I am not sure what constituted an independent Medical Brigade (found an example of a square not oblong patch on the internet)

| Ross, I reread my message and should have said if you get any plain diamond shaped flashes they are Cdn corps badges, the same shape with ziz zag bars are AGRA's(artillery formations).I once worked with a guy who was Royal Artillery attached to a Cdn AGRA in Holland for the attack on the Reichswald Forest.

| Thank you gentlemen. The patches are definitely ones that saw service. We received a set of WW 2 medals and no history on them. People bring in boxes of stuff and leave it, items may not be sorted out for a few days. So I suspect that they saw service possibly with those medals. Or of course the patches were picked up as souvenirs by some soldier. The 2nd Infantry Division (Blue) was so weathered it was like gray on the front so had to copy the back. Be interesting to know the story on them. | |

In addition to Army/Corps level units, Canadian Independent Brigades also had oblong shoulder patches
Looking at my sources the two Armoured Brigades had black, red, black (1st) and black, blue, black flashes (2nd).
Hardrations oblong flash seems to be blue, dark red (maroon), dark blue
Jury is still out I think.

| Hardrats, After a second look at the Canadian Soldier website I think that the diamond with reddish stripe comes under 2 Cdn corps RCAMC. Tony | |
