Thanks Shelldrake. I enjoyed that look back. Wonder if they'll have anything on the barracks in Iserlohn?

Thanks Steve. I was posted in Deilinghofen at Fort Prince of Wales when Aldershop Barracks closed down. I was attached to 1 SSM Bty RCA which moved into Aldershop Barracks now renamed Fort Qu'appelle that fall. I was last there in 2003 and all is gone except for the gymnasium. There are apt towers built full of Turks. Not the same Iserlohn as we remember it.

The only attic bar I came across was in Berchtesgaden at Strub kaserne when attached to the yanks down there.

There was a shortage of bars in the area so we built our own in their attic.

Lots of US soldiers availed themselves of our ale, especially Newcastle Brown.

Small correction Hardrations...Fort Qu'Appelle was formally Mons Barracks and Aldershot barracks was further west and was handed to the Luftwaffe for use as a training school when the Brits moved out of Iserlohn in 1968 only to return in 1970 when the Canadians moved south...Iserlohn has certainly changed since the 70/80s

I was in Barker Bks, Paderborn when the thumbs-up came, allowing us to have bars. Lets face it, it was a way to stop us causing trouble downtown.
I was one of a gang who decorated our, (76 Bty) attic bar and Paderborner brewery fitted the place out.
There was great enthusiasm for drinking "at home" but it was amazing how all personnel would vanish when the beer delivery wagon arrived !

As far as I know, 1 SSM Bty RCA in Fort Prince of Wales had the only authorized bar in barracks. When the Bty moved to Fort Qu'appelle' this bar had made sufficient funds to start up the new Jnr Rnks and the WO/Sgts mess in Fort Qu'appelle'.

Paderborner pilsner - the one with the cavalier/baron sat on a cannonball - I quite liked that stuff when down that way.
