| I seem to remember a similar wayward round in the 1960's.............. landed outside the range, within 30 yards of civvy hikers. Questions were asked of the Defence Minister in the House , something like "Is the minister not alarmed that innocent walkers can be put at risk by careless military action?".
HE round in question was part of WW2 stocks which remained for front line usage, the suitability of which had been determined by the previous administration. The Defence Minister's smart answer was " You are quite right. I am indeed concerned by this incident. I am concerned that one of our high explosive rounds could land within 30 yards of pedestrians in the open and that not one of them was injured".

| Changing to a new computer has delayed me putting this right. In a clumsy attempt to add a little banter recently, I managed to offend John Boy, who has never done anything to offend me. I would like to say how sorry I am. I also realise that I have spoiled the easy going atmosphere of this forum. This will not happen again. | |

| Blimy Brum, That was close as the enemy said of the Gunners attack on him. But I'm sure John Boy was OK with the banter. Incidentally, my photo of HMS Argyll firing off a missile reminds me of a similar photo of an exocet in flight toward HMS Sheffield | |

................................................................................................ ......... And I thought the RN had phased out ships ! Odd thing is, if that tinfish thingy was fired by accident, how come a matelot was standing in a prime location, camera in hand, facing the sun with shutter speed, aperture and focus correctly set to get a pic worthy of publication in the Press ? Or has someone been telling porkies and this isn't the missile which demolished the perimeter fence of the dockyard?

Think the Captain of the ship has some explaining to do !!
Its a Stingray [inert] Training Variant The Sting Ray torpedo is a current British acoustic homing light-weight torpedo (LWT) manufactured by GEC-Marconi, who were later bought out by BAE Systems. It entered service in 1983. It is normaly a helicopter launched torpedo, but can be launched from a ship I think picture was a stock photo as HMS Argyll was in port at the time! - Quote :
- HMS Argyll was moored at Devonport Naval base in Plymouth when the 9ft missile suddenly shot out of its starboard side during a training drill.
Workers watched in disbelief as the tube-shaped projectile flew through the air before blasting a hole in a security fence and slamming into a storage container HMS Westminster (F237) fires a Stingray Training Variant from the tubes adjacent to her hangar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_Ray_(torpedo) _________________ Sua Tela Tonanti

................................................................................................ Thanks Mike ! I suppose any sort of safety catch device might have been deleted in a cost saving exercise........... But I see there's a bit if string tied to the back end to help in the recovery of accidental discharges............ And another memory from the distant past..... 32 LAA Bty were doing layer classification at Todendorf ack-ack range in Feb 1955. Before letting soldiers loose with 40mm rounds, potential layers had qualify with something cheaper. A Bren was strapped on to the L60 Bristol Bofors and layers first practiced aiming at balloons before having a go at a radio controlled model aircraft. From memory this had a wingspan of around 12 feet & a motorcycle engine up front........ you'd pay a fiver to have ago at this, but there was no charge to squaddies, so to reduce overheads the target was wired so that, in the event of it being hit in a vital spot, the engine stopped & then it floated down on a parachute. Well, strange to say, one was hit, an approacher, the easiest of targets to engage, but to the excitement of the layer and the alarm of the gunnery staff, engine stopped but parachute failed to open. It carried on, cleared the guns on the point by around ten feet then came to rest beside the QLs in the rear. As some had loads of ammunition it was quite exciting too to casual observers who were further out of harms way. But there was no fire, no bangs. And no more shooting until another drone could be brought forward. Disappointing really.

| The 'bit of string' at the back is a undevloped parachute which slows it down Heres one being dropped by a Merlin ASW - The parachute is blown off as it enters the water _________________ Sua Tela Tonanti

So I just don't understand PLEASE HELP I'm confused.com
