| A quickie to say the the BAOR Location sleuths have recently expanded their activities to include a detailed study of the British presence in Eckernfoerde in 1945/46
This is developing into another Anglo German investigation, so far the team has identified two major Headquarters and nine major Army units in six locations plus HMS Royal Alice
Possibly more to follow following an onsite visit to the area by a member of the team, in the mean time happy to respond to any queries ( a few years back we were able to help the daughter of a former soldier anxious to visit places where her father had served in the area in this immediate post war period)
Another lead is a delightful 88 year old Guardsman who served in the town in Summer 1946.

| Running total is now HMS Royal Alice, the two major Army Headquarters, plus thirteen major units in seven different locations. Details of a number of subunit/minor units have yet to be confirmed | |

As you are aware "the team" is still investigating the British presence in Eckerfoerde in the immediate post war period.
We have yet to identify who the first British occupants of Carlshoehe Barracks were but we do know that by late Summmer a significant part of the complex was being used as a training school, under British control for the new Federal German civilian Police Force. We also know that the garage accommodation was used by a combination of LADs to provide REME support to all the British units in the Eckernfoerde area. Finally we know that the rump of 65 (Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti Tank Regiment briefly occupied the barracks in early 1946. They applied to officially rename the complex Nelson Barracks (after Admiral Lord Nelson who was born in Norfolk) this was refused but the Regiment appears to have ignored the order.
Arundel Barracks, name officially approved in Spring 1946, was the TVA Sud complex in the centre of town first occupied by the Royal Navy in May 45, 131 (Ayrshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment then moved in when the Navy left to be replaced by 4th Bn Coldstream Guards. 27 Field Regiment were the last British occupants of the site which was largely demolished when they left in Sprinng 47.tvr

| This what the German military site looks like today . Sorry fogotten the name! Anyway, It is the same work as before developing weapons systems for the German Forces. Note the square box like structure on top of the building, used as lookout for Incendaries/Fires. I believe it is clearly shown in the first photo, in the first post I added. WTD 71 Die Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Schiffe und Marinewaffen der Bundeswehr, Maritime Technologie und Forschung (The German Armed Forces Technical Office for Maritime and Maritime Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research). | |
