My late brother Rae Anthony Carruthers served in the RASC somewhere between 1955 and 1961 and was stationed in the Kettwig area near Essen. He was very friendly with a family in a small hamlet near Kettwig called Mintard. I am trying to establish which company he was in, which barracks and any dates of service. I have a picture of him standing beside a lorry with the registration 25 XG 40 if that helps. His best man when he got married I think had the sirname Illingworth. Any information would be most welcome.

On the "Memories" section of the website there are some photos posted by Maurice Taylor. One is of 114 coy RASC on exercise. The soldier second from the left looks like my brother Rae Carruthers but I can't be sure. He would have been 83 now if he was still alive so I am guessing there will not be too many members of this forum that would be contemporries of him. If anyone has any recollections I would be interested to hear from them. Many thanks

Can any of our members throw any light on the vehicle number plate shown in the photo 24XG40.
The style, colour vehicle type and the No plate 'XG' don't fit in with memories of BAOR times. I have seen similar style used on Berlin British vehicles and some where in Rheindahlen area where Royal Signals had attached vehicles from Holland.
Above the windscreen is a small white square. Could this be a Union Jack Flag sticker? Front bumper has outer Width Marker fitted with coloured balls at the top. Definately not a British style of marking! Veh type possibly a Magirus Deutz
Any suggestions anyone? Alan

Yes, that is definitely a union flag decal above the windshield. Also the roof hatch is situated on the right-hand side of the cab which indicates a left-hand drive vehicle. (someone is sitting in that seat). Therefore, it is definitely a German-made vehicle, not British.
Although I was never in Berlin (or in the British Army for that matter) I understood that most trucks in the Berlin Brigade were German instead of the usual Bedford three-tonner. Was this a Berlin RASC company? As for the number plate, that's another question.

The truck is a Sudwerker, my father was CSM of 113 Coy RASC in 1961 when they were equipped with them, later replaced with Maggie's.

The nearest unit to Kettwig was either 11 Coy RASC, (replaced by 114 Coy) or 113 Coy RASC. stationed at Wrexham barracks Mulheim. I was in the LAD 113 Coy from 1957 to 1959 and many times walked down the side of the river Ruhr from Mulheim.
