| I'll ask a mate of mine, now based in Canada to contact you via this forum, he is a member of the 11 Hussars OCA and is hugely knowledgeable on the Cherrypickers and moreover has the paperwork to back up the stuff he can't remember, just as importantly he was at Hohne with the Regiment in the sixties right up to amalgamation. | |

| The 11th Hussars did two stints with BAOR
May 1945 found the 11th Hussars an armored car recce Regiment in Hamburg. Within the month they had moved to Berlin. In the spring of 1946 they moved to Wolfenbüttel. In April 1947 they moved to Delmenhorst. In February 1948 they moved to Osnabruck, with ‘C’ Sqn. going to Berlin for 15 months. In the Spring of 1950 the whole Regiment moved to Wesendorf. Where they remained until March 1953 when after nine years they returned briefly to Aldershot before going on to Malaya.
In 1962 after duty in Aden they were at Tidworth for conversion to tanks, they moved to Hohne as part of 7th Armored Div. where they remained until the Spring of 1969 when they returned to Tidworth for amalgamation with the 10th Royal Hussars later in the same year.

Many thanks for your interesting info on the Cherrypickers
My College Commander at Sandhurst had won an MC in the Western Desert with the Regiment, I arrived in Aden just as they were leaving and the Regiment were responsible for organising a practical promotion in the Verden area where I was a candidate. It was a typical BAOR Autumn day cold, wet and foggy, such was the density of the fog we had to wait an hour to see if it would lift and even then the map reading questions had to be modified. At the end both DS and students were rewarded with a glass of port!!
To go back to your info a couple of points. Steve and I are currently embarked in a major project to trace the history of the early days of BAOR with a fair amount of success. The 11th Hussars were the Reconnaissance Regiment of the famous 7th Armoured Division and ended the War at Brundesbuttel at the western end of the Kiel Canal (Hamburg was the responsibility of 53 Welsh Division). They were specially selected by FM Montgomery to lead the British Contingent at the Final Allied Victory Parade in Berlin but did not leave Brundesbuttel till early July 45. After leaving Berlin in Spring 46 they moved to a former Lutfwaffe airfield at Jever on the Friesland coast to relieve the departing Canadians and promptly named the complex Cardigan Barracks (I have seen a photo of a Barrack sign) In Spring 47 they moved again to make way for an incoming Danish Brigade which took over responsibility for the Wilhelmshaven area | |
