Subject: George Rollo, Sgt Major Black Watch Berlin 14/6/2021, 22:36
Hello,
My Grandfather was Sgt. Major George Rollo, stationed in Spandau during 49-51 I believe. I am coming to Berlin in August and hope to come to the barracks. My Grandmother Elizabeth, and her 3 children were with him. My Uncle remembers fishing for gold fish in a pond in front of the barracks. Does anyone know where that might be? Thank you in advance!

Welcome on board,
I'm sure one of the members knows better BERLIN Spandau area well. Especially the barracks.
I'm not sure how much of the immediate still stand? I am sure the houses near the barracks might still exist.??
Regards Alan

Thank you! Yes, I am going to take a look. The way my Uncle describes it, they lived in a bungalow behind the gymnasium. It would be so wonderful to see the area today. I welcome any and all information and or guidance!

My BAOR research is currently May 45 to Mar 49, however various sources have 1st Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in Montgomery Barracks, Lanzendorfer Weg, Kladow, Berlin-Spandau from Apr 50 to Oct 51.

Montgomery Bks in the past. Now the German Bks called Blücher
I am unsure of the full story connection? Yellow line indicates route of the old Border
On this Map in Red. The Border LH corner.

Could this be the elusive fish pond at Montgomery Bks in 1949.
Kind permission of the 'Imperial War Museum', London.

The description is not correct. This border was not between the British and Russian sectors of Berlin but between the British sector of Berlin and the Russian zone of occupation which not belonged to Berlin.

Thanks for that Wolfgang,
Good job I didn't make that mistake. Blame it on the Press guys and the War Museum.
I am having enough problems with this Berlin stuff. So if you spot a mistake by me. Please PM me to correct the mistake. Getting Spandau Prison a bit off position was bad enough. I have corrected it now.
I am currently trying to plot the exact exit point accurately of the Transit Corridor into Berlin on my 1990 Berlin Tourist Map.

Thank you both. Yes, my Gran mentioned her back Garden being against the Soviet zonal border. This makes sense! I can focus my search for bungalows along that border. And the pond is where my Uncle was scolded for "gold fish" fishing as a child.
