My father served in 130 D.I.D. (Detail Issue Depot), Osnabruck approx. 1945-1947, but also socialized in Minden, which is where he met my mother. Here is a photo of them at a Christmas party in 1946 (or possibly 1945) in the No. 6 Female Mess.

Hi PSears Nice picture, My Father was in the Royal Green Jackets and met my Mother in Minden where she was cook and house keeper for the battalion Commander in the late 1940's. We then spent many years of holidays at my Grandparents in Schwarzer Weg, Minden. Sadly both my parents are no longer with us but it was nice being reminded of Minden Regards George

Thanks for your comment, George. My mother was a DP and did some work for the BAOR in Minden (I don't know the nature of the work). Her letter of reference was issued by the Acting Camp Commandant, whose signature I can't read, from Zonal Executive Offices, CCG Minden, 64 HQ. I believe she left in early 1947 (to go to London). I have never been to Minden - maybe one day! Patty

The Royal Green Jackets were formed on 1 January 1966, then your father would have been 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) who arrived in Elizabeth Barracks formerly Gneisenau Kaserne Minden from Osnabrück on 17 Feb 48 relieving 1st Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

I served there i the mid 80s. Went back for a visit in the early 2000s when I was stationed at Bielefeld. All of the barracks were still there at that time, but some were under different management. Elizabeth Bks certainly was. Most of it had been converted into small businesses. Kingsley Bks was much the same. It wasn't my favourite posting truth be told, but that was due to the state of the accommodation and the attitude of my management more than anything else, but it was a nice town and located close to several other places which were worth visiting. If you get the chance, go.
