Subject: “D” PLAT 17COY RASC B.O.A.R help please 30/7/2023, 08:03
Hello I’m trying to research my grandads service history, he was in the Merchant Navy then he was in the RAF and the RASC but I don’t know much about it, I don’t know the exact dates of when he was in the RASC but from his letter I have to my nana I’m thinking it was around 1947-1948 because he sends his love to my mum in the letter, she was born on Christmas Day 1946 and in the picture of him holding her as a baby he is in his RASC uniform. I know he was a Driver If anyone has any information about “D” Platoon 17Coy (T) RASC B.O.A.R from around this time I would be really grateful.

Yes I am aware of Steve's notes. We work together on this site. Steve specialises on where Unit may have been. He has special data to back up his results. His info will not normally have information about persons. Sometimes Senior names are included
The source I have provided you with has little personal data. That type of personal information can only be obtained on application to Glasgow. See below: There are two application forms to complete. They normally take a month or two to send you what you have applied for.
I'll have a quick look at the site I visited again, to see if they hold anything like what Steve has mentioned.
Regards Alan

Here is a typical Journal which includes various units in Hamburg, but not the Coy you seek. Hamburg Car Company
Additionally, remember I mentioned the lack of peoples names mentioned in these type of Journals, except possibly Sports Competitions, and of course Officers, who are riding the Horses. Of course!

Wow this is so interesting! I had no idea that this sort of thing went on, I have a picture of assault courses and marching for miles, it is heartening to see that there were things for the lads and lasses to do that could help to make their time away from home more bearable. Ps I'm sure I'm doing something wrong on this site because when I tried to reply to Steves message on this thread it said that I was unable to post replies and the thread was locked I'm not great with technology lol Thank you both for all this great information, I really do appreciate your time

Oooh I'm excited I've just found this in a war diary on ww2 talk, I know it's in 1944 but I don't know what year my grandad moved from raf to RASC could this be his platoon? 1 July 1944 Coy Rear HQ, “D” Pl and 1 section of Wksps moved into location on banks of River Seulles on Caen-Bayeux Road.

I've colorized a photo and think I can identify the patch on my grandads uniform in this picture, it's a different patch to what he has in the other picture, can anyone tell me why this would be? Thank you,

Thanks Alan, Could you tell me what it would mean if a soldier was wearing this patch? did soldiers have a different patch every time they were sent to a different place? I'm trying very hard to understand the formation of the British services but I'm struggling to understand what order all the different layers mean. Like at one point my grandad was “D” Plat 17 Coy RASC (T) B.O.A.R
Is the bulldog patch related to that part of his time in the service? On another photo his patch looks like either a 1st 2nd or 8th Army patch but as it's in B&W it's hard to tell. Do you know how the bulldog relates to a soldier that also wore one of the patches I've mentioned? I'm just trying to piece things together from old photos of him while I wait for his service records.
Thanks heaps for all your help

Hi, Best go to page one of the Link I sent you. It explains.
If a person changed from a regiment to a different one somewhere! His new unit might have a different patch. Moving to another theatre of war could also cause a change of patch. People got to know the patches. Otherwise one might need to wear a sticky tape across his forehead naming who he was with! LoL!
Now to the explanation of the address layout:
D” Plat= D Platoon. Usually a group of 30-50 pers. It could be more or less pers. 17 Coy= It is usual to split units up into Companies ie. A. B. C . Etc. Some have old Battle names. RASC (T)= RASC indicates 'Royal Army Service Corps'. Mainly Comprised of Wagons , Cars and other Transport. (T) in this case indicates the Role they working in. See below!
B.O.A.R= British Army of the Rhine ie. is a specific area the British were allocated in Germany.
(T- Force) Were the Allies tasked in finding the German Secrets before they could be destroyed. eg Equipment, Documents, Torpedoes, Planes, Weapons etc.
Def T-Force
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Force#Background In this case, I suspect your family member in RASC, was possibly a Driver of a Wagon or Car, supporting the British Forces Teams who were searching for secrets!!
