Hi Paul. My husband Terry Cavanagh served in 4/7th from 68-77. Sadly he passed awy on 19 Jan this year. He was diagnosed with cancer last June. You may have known him. He was in S|Sqn and GW Tp. Have you tried RDG.coolforums.org. It is a great site just for 4/7th RDG.

I served with the 4th/7th RDG from 14/10/1971 until 13/10/1975. I joined the Regiment in 1972 at Athlone Bks, Sennelager.

Between 1973 and the time I was de-modded in October 1975 the regiment was stationed at Bhurtpore Bks, Tidworth, Hants.

I was sorry to hear about Terry Cavanagh. As a very young 17 year old I was posted to S/Sqn GW troop when I joined the regiment and I vaguely remember there were two Cavanagh's in GW troop, although I cannot remember their first names for sure, Terry rings a bell and I believe the other was Dave? I do remember that one had light hair while the other was dark, during roll call the WOII would call Cavanagh White & Cavanagh Black.

My Uncle was in the RDG (4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards) in the early to mid 60's. He was stationed in Germany during his national service but stayed on afterwards.
Due to his background in civvy street he was given the task of looking after the regiments racehorses. This is all I know about his time in the army can anyone help with where he may have been or does anyone know about the racehorses.
I have a photo of him in uniform sat on one of the horses called SOLANI.

A relatively easy question to answer compared to some recent challenges.

The 4th/7th were in Lumsden Barracks Fallingbostel up until October 1959

They moved to Catterick North Yorkshire as the RAC Centre Training Regiment

In August 1962 they returned to BAOR to York Barracks Munster where they were to remain for the next three years.

There are a number of Contributors to this site who have served in Munster, a few in York Barracks, they will be better placed to answer your questions about the Regimental Stables. In my time Munster was one of the centres for BAOR Polo and the Cavalry Officers kept a number of ponies (not race horses) in the Regimental Stables.

Sorry I can't help with the 4th/7th question, bigbadtee, (welcome aboard by the way), but when were you in KOYLI ?

In the 60s, a bloke in our battery claimed his brother from that mob. He used to tell us some hair-raising stories about their time in Malaya.
