| In Canada after an exercise a young Fusileer was told he couldn't go the bar with his mates but had to perform some pointless job as punishment for some misdemeanour. After an hour or so we were in the bar (or Jerk as it was called) getting pissed we suddenly heard crashing and banging outside, moments later the Fusileer who should have been doing some pointless punishment ran through the door, up to the bar and asked for a beer. It transpired he had nicked a 432 and crashed through two ten foot fences then parked the vehicle up against the doors of the "Jerk" sliding down the front and into the bar. He got a huge round of applause, the Canadian orderly officer allowed him to finish his beer before he was marched away.
Good man. | |

| Those of you, both Brits and Canucks, who were posted to Soest will recall Jacobi Strasse, where the Pilgrim Haus is located. At the "entrance" to Jacobi Strasse, just outside The Pilgrim Haus, and part of the old city ramparts is a small pedestrian gate, made from the green limestone of the area. There used to be two.
The story goes -- and I totally believe it -- that back in the early 1960's/late 50's a Canadian driving some behemoth of an American car (some of the guys did transport their cars over to Germany...dumb move as the huge American-style cars couldn't be driven through most German streets, at least not back then) was drunk (gosh, ya think???) and rammed the vehicle into the corner of the gate on the left (west side), essentially demolishing it.
500 years of architectural history....Pfffft...gone.
For some reason the City Fathers chose not to restore the gate and so for the next generation, and several yet to come, no doubt, we are left with a single, odd-looking little portal into the old city.
And they say the Canadians didn't leave their mark. HA!! | |

| Hi, missing green grass and trees in Hohne area?! If i would be located there i would miss High buildings concrete and lot of traffic and people. I can remember a similar story by the germans. Some crew of of a Leopard used this one to drive around to a pub some 50 Km s away. As they left their drinks the tank was surounded by parking vehicles. So the driver was swelling and had to drive hard. He used gear backwards (might be to heavy) and the Gun rammed through the kitchen window. Comander was shocked, ordered Forward and the Leo rolled over a car. Might be this happens in any army.
