Someone told me that Herford is now 1 Div HQ, that used to be Verden BFPO32. So when did it change?? Shocked

I believe that it changed in about 1993, with 4th (UK) Armoured Div being retitled 1st (UK) armoured Div.

One source has them in Hammersmith, whilst another has them in Wentworth Barracks.

In Apr 93 1 Div HQ & Sig Regt was renamed Lower Saxony Sig Regt in Oct 93 1 Div moved to 4 Div location both barracks Hammersmith Sig Regt and Wentworth for Div HQ 4 Div disbanded with options for change hope this helps

Hi guys Went to Old Caithness Barracks in Verden recently the majority of the structures are still there It has been revamped into the town services area but the form of the old Guardroom and Tower is still there.... the tower full of Cell telephone arials...

Hi Bob, I've just been looking at it on Google maps, big changes there. Looks like the pig farm has gone as well, giving the piggies a sandwich was the only light relief when trogging round on guard duty.

Further to Steve's info above.

In practice it was just a case of renaming 1 Armd Div HQ & Signal Regt to Lower Saxony District HQ & Signal Regt and 4 Armd Div HQ & Signal Regt to 1 (UK) Armd Div HQ & Signal Regt. I was actually in Germany during '93 as a civvy working for MoD and experienced the demise of BAOR under Options for Change/Drawdown.

As for the Barracks, the Div HQ is in Wentworth Bks and the Signal Regt is in Hammersmith Bks. They are very close to each other, effectively either side of Vlothoer Straße.

Hi Ken, Steve does that mean when we talk about 1 Div HQ & Sigs we have to define what year or what location.... >Verden was a bit outside area and very Flat compared to further south..but on ther other hand we did manage to get a C 42 link running from the dyster to Verden tower...
