"Winterbourne Gunner" The NBC School. Handy for testing all the nasties concocted a couple of miles NE at Porton Down. A lot of the old National Service guys were used as guinea pigs. A national disgrace, but that's the MoD for you!
I think that at the south side of the WG site, there was an old hutted camp called, "Figsbury Camp". I believe it's gone now. Am I right?

Hope I aint to late to report in Sir! I reported to the railway station at Troon on Tuesday 6th May 1969. Boarded a Bedford GS vehicle along with other new recruits where we were dropped off at the Guard room at JTR Troon. (What was the name of these barracks ?). Introduced to those nice chaps dressed in uniform with loud voices. I was sent to got to think here which way did it work... Goodmans Company or Cassels Company one or the other. I went through basic square bashing with Platoon Sargeants Sgt Grant Queens Own Highlanders and a Sgt Murray Royal Irish Rangers. During my time there we did the basics adventure camp was on the Isle of Arran then onto block leave in the August. Returned to Troon to do trade training and learn to drive. I went through the driver training first leaning to control the vehicle on the little airfield north of the camp. I progressed to take my driving test in the town of Ayr. I failed... I was supposed to be a Radio operator driver doing morse code at 12 words a minute. The morse sent me didi dah dit dah dah di dah....etc even today I remember it. Had enough of failing morse tests they asked me to re-trade so I did.... I left Troon in April 1970 for 8th Sigs Catterick. I remember fondly those adventure training / battle camps fondly. Arran, Barry Budan, Garelochead. I have only met up with one person who was in Troon the same time as myself a Royal Signals lad by the name of J/Sig Pape.... two other names I do remember due to their surnames almost been linked are J/Pte Cell and J/Pte Clink....

Hi Advent and welcome to the site. I served at JTR Troon from Aug 62 - May 64 and co-incidentally was posted to Churchill Bks, Lippstadt when I Mustered. Dundonald Camp was the barracks and driver training was started off at Gailes (before we were unleashed on the unsuspecting public). Cassels Coy was for Recruits followed by Goodbodys, Ritchies or Murrays for Trade Training.

Thats it your right Dundonald Camp not Barracks... Strange everywhere else I served apart from Catterick and the various RAF Stations were Barracks i.e. Kingsley, York, Churchill, Scarborugh, but JTR was Dundonald Camp. Regarding the Companys Cassels Coy Red Tags on Epaulets and Goodbodys Coy Blue tags... Well done on pointing me in the right direction. Thanks.
