| It was said, in our regiment that when the Canadians were in residence in Deilinghofen, they let the local ice hockey team practice on their rink. As a result of this the Deilinghofen team were top of the Bundesliga. When the British moved in and the rink became a caravan park for the QM staff, the team, having nowhere to do their training, fell from grace. (Monseur Trudeau has a lot to answer for!) It sounds sad but has a ring of truth. Would any of you Canadian gentlemen like to substantiate this?

| Don't know about Deilinghofen I lived in Soest, but I think there is still a team in the Bundesliga called Iserlohn Roosters. The only ice rink to survive is at Fort York in Soest, now called Moehnsee Ice Centre,no evidence of hockey mostly ice discos. | |

| I just checked in Google,EC Deilinghofen were only active for one season 69-70,in the Oberliga North,by the 70-71 season we were gone so maybe that explains their short existance.Iserlohn Roosters are still in the DEL and have been active since 1959 | |

| The Iserlohner Roosters are still active, yes but got started under the Canadians. I believe at Deilinghofen rink, but I'm not 100% certain.
There is a large 'denkmal' in Deilinghofen commemorating the Canadian hockey connection (one of the few such memorials in existence that acknowledges our presence in the area for almost 30 years!). There is also a large 'eishalle' in Iserlohn that is home to the Iserlohner Roosters.
I do know the rink at Deilinghofen was offered, as a rink, to the British who turned it down (as they did a variety of perks and good deals) and was subsequently 'trashed' by the departing Canadians. I didn't know it had become a caravan park for the QM staff. Odd.
When I lived in Iserlohn in 71-72 and was chumming around with the British kids in Hemer I also met a young German fellow who lived next to the Married Quarter area and was best pals with one of the fellows I chummed with. I forget his name. However, he did play hockey...something his new British pals just couldn't fathom! I believe he practiced at Deilinghofen, but perhaps not.
As blasphemous as it may sound, being Canadian and all, I have very little interest in hockey finding it a total bore. I was no different when I was 17 and 18 on that score, so I never 'talked hockey' with this German kid. Rather regret that now as looking back it was actually unique and an important legacy of the Canadians, but I didn't see it that way at the time! | |

| You'll have noticed in the Hockey Memorial Photo a small Carin to the right bottom corner. This is the only memorial I have found in the Deilinghofen/Iserlohn area to any Canadian troops who served there. Of course as it reads it to the Royal Canadian Artillery. I have contacted the PPCLI and the Queens Own Rifles of Canada why they don't have any. | |
