God, there's a hell of an echo in here ! Oh look, I'm the only one on the air !

I wonder if some of the older contributors can help with this one.

Early in '71 we had just been posted to Hohne and, in the depths of that horrible winter, we used to be collected by Bedford from outside the Apotheke in Bergen to be taken in to work.

One morning, as we drove along, hanging from the canopy rails like a bunch of Fruit Bats, somebody said; "Did anybody see that porn on the telly last night ?". A lurid description of the programme followed. Hardly anybody had a TV in those days (well, why the hell would you ?), but when the word got round there was a sudden rush to buy a set.

Next thing, there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth because the promised porn was not in evidence and money had been wasted.

The story then came out that there had been a demand from the German public that porn be made available on general viewing. The powers that be broadcast porn for a limited time then held a referendum to see if the zuschauers wanted broadcasts to continue. The result of the referendum was "Nein". These blokes had bought their TVs around the time of the referendum.

Does anyone remember this happening ? It sounds typical of the way the Germans would handle this sort of thing. I'm pretty confident this was not a Urban Myth.

The only time I saw porn was some old grainy cine film that appeared on a weekend break during an exercise. Big sheet and old projector supplied by the SQMS I think? Probably charged for it and I don't mean a 252.

I often wonder what it must have been like after I left and videos appeared. Did every squaddie have one in his room and much swopping of digusting filth abounded and got even worse once DVD's were invented?

I don't know about films and stuff as this was well before video, but the block was awash with porn books, those danish ones were very prevalent.

One night on Exercise I was struggling through the woods to get a flash signal when I saw this light, on nearing it I realised I was watching a porn film being projected onto the side of a 12 x 12. Lovely, it was the commcen of course.

70's, 80's and 90's porn was rife in various forms especially in the guardroom sat in the back room with a TV and Video player- some was downright revolting and like they say - 'you seen one, you seen em all'.

The close proximity to the Dutch border, especially at Viersen/Moenchengladbach made it easy to buy whatever took your fancy. Animal, s&m you name it, someone in the block had it.
