Units at Roberts Barracks

Hi all,

I lived in block 12 South side with 37 AER in 1951 and 1952

Who was there 1945 to November 1950 ?

37 AER left in 1955; then 25 Eng Reg from 1958 to I think 1992?

RAMC Fld Ambulance units also in south side 1974 to 1998

Who was there 1998 to 2008?

Anyone lived in block 12? It was third block from the main gate towards Osnabruck, beside An der nette heide

An interesting and challenging question

Steve and I are currently attempting to produce a series of briefs giving the locations of the principle units which comprised 21st Army Group and the British Army of the Rhine in the period 1945-48

Osnabruck is a typcal example of the problems we face. In 1945 we know there were definately Canadians, Belgian Polish as well as British units based in the area. Detailed accurate information is hard to come by not least because of the variety of records and the abbreviations used. Watch this space

PS By 37 AER do yo mean 37 Armoured Engineer Regiment?

It seems to me that Roberts Barracks must have been used from 1945, after the stores were emptied.
Polish seems to ring a bell, either labour or transport units

No not Armoured but Army: Regiment title was changed I think in 1952?, I think Corps Eng Reg?
37 Army Engineer Regiment; a bridging regiment no armour. This was the regiment formed in Wales, at Crickhowell, near Abergavenny early in 1950, squadrons renumbered then moved to Roberts Barracks November 1950. Comprising 33, 34, 40 Sqns and 41 FP sqn.
Note some lists on the web do not list 40 Field [my unit]
We were in 12 block; north from us towards the gate was another sqn, dont know who was in the block [20] south side of the gate
41 FP was the block on the south side of the cook house [block 15], so opposite block 12

Of all the many hundreds [thousands] of us who served in Roberts Barracks, surely there must be more who can help with information
It would be great to produce a history of Roberts, if I can help with anything please ask? Even consolidating reports
I remember locations of NAAFI, Chapel, Sickbay [north side far end] some details of the layout and use of our block etc.

Have been collecting RE unit locations but have put the project to one side as working on BAOR 1945 to 1949 have a look at my blog scroll down past Willich and check the details from 1947 and will redo the Roberts Barracks BAOR Locations in the next couple of days...not sure of the history of the barracks after May 45 know that 3 Inf Div were in the area for a while and from Jun 45 Osnabrück was under command 3 Canadian Inf Div CAOF until May 46 then 52 (Lowland) Inf Div took over the area prior to 1951 when the RE moved in needs more research

40 Field Sqn was block 12

the Roberts Barracks units that I cAN REMEMBER ARE

The units/Regts from 1972 were right of the main gate far side was 2Arm Div Fld Amb
RAMC, from the manin gate to the swimming pool was 1 Royal Horse Artillery RA with dental centre on the end, To the left was all 2Arm Div Eng Regt RE, with a det of the Int and Security IC .
The postal and Couriar unit RE was in the building faceing the gate to the left of the main road,11 Fld Sqn RE were some where at the rear of the camp in the old Fld Amb block.

Someone knows the name of this shop or of one of this girls? I think this photo was taken between 1954 and 1956

There in Oct 67 with 37 Field along with 39 and I think 16 Field support which made up 25 Engr Regt . Part of 39 had just got back from Aden which was a bit of a boiling pot at the time ! Left for 7 Squadron at Deverell bks , Ripon in late 69 !
