| When stationed at Soltau we regularly visited Hamburg, what a place. We would usualy drive up on Saturday afternoon and our first port of call was always the 'Zillertal' a large beer house on the Reeperbahn (Next door to the police station if memory serves) Great place for a sing song with a live oompah band. We would stay in there until about midnight then venture out to explore the delights of the Reeperbahn which had an almost carnival atmosphere. Every building was lit up in neon lights and the place was busy until 5 or 6am. The only time we ever saw trouble was if Hamburg FC were playing at home, football hooliganism was not just a British problem. | |

| I had gone back to Germany ahead of the battalion during the Berlin Wall panic. After the rest of the boys arrived a few months later I was inundated for several weeks with requests to see these "places where the women sit in the window" in Dortmund and Bochum by leering new arrivals. To make matters worse, I was the sole owner of a car at the time and wound up being the taxi driver. I felt like a pimp after a while and it got boring sitting drinking beer while they did their shopping (HONEST!) | |

| All this talk of "Houses of Ill Repute" reminnds me of a Battery Signals Sergeant we had, called Jock Thompson, who loved to regale us with stories of his escapades.
With a group on a visit to the Reeperbahn one time, a nude dancer kept targetting their table. Her party trick was to pick up a five mark piece from the table with a portion of her anatomy that must be unmentionable but obvious to all.
Being the little bugger that he was, he thought it would be a good idea to heat up a coin with his lighter before putting it on the table, with predictable results.
Aah, squaddy humour eh ?

Aah, squaddy humour eh ?Yes, I heard a similar story when out in Cyprus with the UN at Nicosia Airport, and the one about an old Granny who hung around Squaddie Bars... was 'trollied' by some troops after they were well and truly blootered. Apparently her party piece was to make a Coke bottle 'disappear' into some unmentionable part of the anatomy.......

| Quite soon after my then wife came out to me at Hohne, we had a look at one of these places while out near Fallingbostel as stuff like this was quite novel to teenagers in the early 1970s.
We were both 19 at the time.
Anyway, to cut a long story short. Within about 5 minutes of me, my mate, and my wife turning up, and having a look. The Polizei arrived and started asking us questions.
If we hadn't had our Id cards, a night in the cells might have occured.

| I think it was the old style Coke Bottle.....one geezer said it was 2 bottles at a time.... Yuck!!... mind you she hung around the Sovereign Base Area at Famagusta...... She probably 'entertained the troops' to eke out the pension, and green Shield stamps she received at the local NAAFI Store...... lolo It was just a story that made it rounds in the barracks... could have been true, or not as the case was after a night on the Keo Brandy as the evening wore on, andything female of any indeterminate age looked more and more bootiful...... Misspent yoof!!
