God, can i remember Gütersloh back in the early 60's. We flew out of and back to from the UK. It was the main troop thansport airport then.
Great site!

It still was when I flew in in 78 and few back out in 82.
Most abiding memory was watching two Harriers taking off in formation in a snow storm, while our flight home for leave was grounded.

I flew out to Gutersloh in 1967 on my way to a posting in Lippstadt. My brother was stationed at Gutersloh in the RAF Police and said he would meet me . The luggage hall slowly emptied and I couldn'y find my kit anywhere, eventually there was just me left in an empty hall and all the transport had left.
My brother and his mate came in laughing, the bastards had picked my kit up and hid it. They gave me a lift to Lippstadt in a police vehicle and dropped me off at the guardroom.

RAF Gütersloh has something like a fan page at http://sg-etuo.de ... Texts are in german but sometimes Google Translate is helpful. The site contains nearly 4000 pictures taken at Gütersloh. Contributions are always welcome.

We flew on a Belfast once, most alarming when it taxied backwards with the ramp still down, loads of hot fumes blowing in. Enormous great thing, I remember they had a portaloo clamped to the deck.

I understand Aeroflot had outside toilets............
On two separate occasions at Gutersloh, 106 Sqn RE(V) irritated the owners when it was necessary for sqn to unload their kit themselves from the VC 10s parked up on the perimeter tarmac. Each time an RL was backed up and contacted the aircraft. Once on the floppy bits on the trailing edge of a wing, and another time two years later when the Bedford brushed the rear fuselage. Don't know what the fuss was about........only small bits of paint were scraped off the canopy frames, it was hardly necessary to complete the FMT3s

Following sessions in the in-bks. dome trainer, Bofors gun layers in the 1950s were classified first at Todendorf early in the year, where they fired at UAVs & balloons with a Bren clamped to the L60, then their expertise, or otherwise, was recorded by camera gun at Gutersloh in late Spring. Having been accepted as being potentially more dangerous to a enemy than to the home team, they returned to Todendorf and the Baltic coastline in late summer to fire live 40mm at Mosquito towed sleeves.
In 1955, 32 Minden Bty had tented accommodation beside Gutersloh's runway, their guns were trained on the various aircraft coming and going. And there were plenty, for 32 were allocated a slot at Gutersloh when the RAF & NATO were engaged in some sort of aerial wargame. Very exciting, too, but irritating to anyone trying to sleep off the local brew. Gutersloh's Canberras were taking off through the small hours, then the opposition paid a return visit before the Canberras came home. They were narked, apparently, for the Gutersloh management had arranged for the opposing airfields to be photographed before whistle was blown for kick-off.
Adding to the noise irritation was the RAF's reluctance to let Lance-jacks use the Corporals' canteen and the army's insistence that they weren't welcome in the Airmens' bar either. The dozen Bofors lined up for layer training were appreciated, however. 32 Bty were credited with one or two hits, and Gutersloh had better defences than any of the other airfields.

In German but future plans for RAF GT / Princess Royal Barracks as a Trading Estate (Gewerbe Park), in Sep 2021 upgraded gas and power services being put in. Interestingly the Officers' Mess building with its Goring Room in the attic not qualified for building protection order and will be demolished, and the Airfield Tower reported to be crumbling - poor building materials - and will also be demolished.

I first visited Gutersloh as a 4 year old with my dad (RASC pongo) in 1962. We were stationed at Bunde at that time, I remember the Spitfire at the gate. My next visits came in the early 1970s as a CCF cadet at Windsor boys school in Hamm, we lived in Nienburg then. There were Lightnings and Wessex there then. In 1980 I was posted there, for 3 years, as an RAF techie to work on the Harriers. I visited a couple of years ago while on a Germany visit on my Ducati, but could not get onto the closed down station. Great shame as that place has had a big effect on my life.
