At the end of each year, it's customary for the news media to review the world's problems and to wonder if they can be solved. I've attached areminder of one set of problems that we happily no longer have to deal with.The file accompanying this is a scan of the U.S. government'sEnglish-language translation of Berlin newspapers from the morning of 23December 1970, reporting the re-opening of the Autobahns between WestGermany and West Berlin to traffic, after harassment of holiday travelershad forced us all to think about politics instead of Christmas and New YearsEve. The world has gone on to other problems since then, but this is a reminderthat even the most complex situations can eventually be worked outsuccessfully.
