| Oh they were the days. Do any Bleeps on the Forum boards remember the 'old Days?' During the 1960s and 1970s operating in and running Comcens, Tape Halls, Tape Factories, On-Line One-Time-Tape Crypto equipment (ETCRM's??). Oh what fun I seem to remember working in the 'Hole' at 16 Sigs, Bradbury Barracks under the RHQ offices. fun, fun, fun - carrying punched paper tape 'Murray' coded messages wrapped round one's neck from one end of the coms hall to the tape factory. Splitting tapes, and send them onward to the appropriate addressee. then there was working on the service desk with clipboards checking in every tape/message into the Comcen, then checking same out again, compiling stats and then doing the 'finals' at close of play each 24 hour period before it all started again for the new day at '00:001 HRS'. The noise of old GPO Telex machines, and the quieter Siemens T100's. All the old electro-mechanical kit that was used in mainstream Military comms during those years. Breakdowns were a part of the 'embugerrance factor' we had to put up with. But those are distant memories, and I'm not sure just how reliable the kit was. I remember that new kit was trialed from time to time. From the old paper tape One-Time systems (ETCRM) we went over to the BID-610 on-line systems. The exercises out in the field with battle conditions Comcens being set up in field locations with cables everywhere etc. All great fun, not. I just did not like going out on exercise, especially when we were on standby for 'Quick Train' (Snell Zug!!) I preferred working in the static Comcens. It is curious why I am thinking of all this today as I type my 'Blah' on my Laptop to send it away into the ether to land up I know not where... wherever the Servers are located for this Website. I must not get too sentimental and weepy about the 'good old days', as I might spoil the taste of my morning coffee and cake. I must get out more and see the world a bit more often. I must not get like old Uncle Albert in "Only Fools & Horses".... "When I was in the woaaar!!" Soon the old teleprinters etc were phased out, and the first screen & keyboard GPO type telex machine were brought in - yes even us Bleeps got to use them occasionally. Of course it was all changing in the late 1970s when I left the mob for civvy street to continue my working life as a Computer Operator working in IT for many years before retiring a few years ago .. time to go out for more coffee and cake. Must make a visit sometime soon down to the Corps Museum at 30 Sigs Blandford. It has been a good many years since I was down there last reminiscing amongst the exhibits, only problem it is a long drive down there from Colchester - Chelmsford area..... . | |

| Last time I worked tape was 644 Sigs Tp out in Xeros with the Danes. Sit Rep sent each night at 2359. Had to be proof read by the DanCon duty officer prior to being sent off. My back up key board had bullet holes in. Yep genuine bullet holes. It was ex-RAF equipment from a radar base that got shot up by the Greeks/Turks. When ever we had to prove it out, it was like each key worked on a slow hydraulic system. The C11 was in part stashed against the wall. All cable and radio relay. The other back up was C42 not the most reliable thing. The big advantage was the sigs room had to be air-conditioned to keep the equipment working. Drove the Brit techs mad that we qualified for that. To check out the land line a Greek tech was flown in by Helicopter seeing as we were in Turk territory. Also learned that, " Unwanted attention by Turks soldiers, was UN talk for rape". Interesting to say the least.

| Yes, surprising I was speaking to a geezer a few weeks ago, retired now, who worked as a software engineer during the 1960s who was part of the development team who wrote the programs for the automatic computer controlled message switch system of the DTN network.
It was when I mentioned to him that I had been in the R Sigs, that he then spoke about his career in software development of packages for War Box back then (Now MoD).

| Yes Gordon, software engineering as computers then were only tape readers and binary/logic devices. My father worked on some of these first computers, when one computer would take up the space of at least one floor of a big building. | |

| Just by chance came up with this site and Unclevanya's post after Googlin Bradbury Bks to see what is happening there. Fair amount in local Krefeld papers came up too. In some ways sad to see. In all managed two spells at 16 for my sins in both 1 and 2 Sqn. | |

| Paper tape, ah yes, good old 5 unit Murray Code.. there was a time when I could actually "read" that stuff, well at least some of it.
I worked in the Comcen at Munster from 1974 - 1977'ish. | |

| We used paper tape (Murray Code) back in the 50's, was used to double encrypt outbound coded Typex messages, last time I used it was when attached to Aussie Signals in Kure, Japan in 1954. NOW that was a posting.
