Does the Canadian Army still wear the famous Red Patch we used to see in days of yore ? Question 2 What is the origin of the Red Patch ? brum

| I'm only a transplanted Limey living in Canada (1966), but as far as I am aware the Red Patch was the formation sign of the 1st Canadian Division .. could be wrong but Wikipedia supports it ... see ...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Canadian_Infantry_Division ... and I think it was phased out on the amalgamation cock up in the late 60's.

| I know this may be beating the 52 set subject a bit to death. But I recieved this to-day from a former RC Sigs Tech who served with me in the 1 SSM Bty RCA. The quote is his. Check the site out. This will bring back some memories. (I still remember the first time I got wacked by 1300 volts while learning the transmitter on my group one course) http://www.jproc.ca/marconi/no52_set.htmlAlso the Red Patch was brought back in a while back, but I've yet to see it on some one. May have been taken down again. I've got a photo of me some where, wearing it in Germany. Found a photo. T'iss a picture of me in Feb. 65 at Fort Henry, Soest. I was on course at 4 Sigs Sqn RC Sigs from 1 SSM Bty RCA. It was the day that the Canadian Maple Leaf Flag was first unfurled. I was on the Quarter Guard for this. You can make out the Red Patch on my left arm. It was worn on both arms. ( Check the boots and putties). When you wore those Red Patches, your chest expanded a bit more. The picture it's self is a copy of one an old girl friend from Nuneaton kept all these years. Scanned it and sent it on from Oz. Go figure she'd held on to it all these years.

Does the Canadian Army still wear the famous Red Patch we used to see in days of yore ? Question 2 What is the origin of the Red Patch ? brum[/quote] That's an interesting question....if my dad was still alive I'd be able to answer it for you (after having asked him)....given how emblematic and all the Red Patch was it's odd I never wondered myself what the origins of it were. It *might* have something to do with having the Red Ensign as the "Canadian flag" for so many years before the Red Maple Leaf flag came out in 1969, but that seems a bit of a reach. Hardrations surely would know the answer!!!
